👋 Meet Connor.

Connor was just 3 years old when he began to suffer from a concerning array of symptoms. A blood test revealed the root cause: B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia, a fast-growing blood cancer.

Connor was immediately referred to Nationwide Children’s Hospital in March 2021. He began receiving chemotherapy, blood transfusions and other procedures. It wasn’t easy, especially since Connor’s family lives two hours north of the hospital, but hospital staff did everything they could to make him comfortable. From Child Life specialists who remembered little details about him to the nurse who made him a rainbow loom bracelet to use as his ID band, small acts of kindness made a big difference.

On May 18, 2023, he rang the bell to celebrate finishing treatment. For over two years, Connor returned to school and the regular routines of being a kid. But when Connor’s lymph nodes suddenly became swollen, his mother, Sarah, knew something was wrong. Sadly, his cancer had relapsed. Connor was admitted to the hospital on the night of July 4, 2025. That night he watched the fireworks from his window. He remained inpatient for 32 days.

Connor is currently receiving treatment, which will continue for two more years. While the hospital may not be the most convenient option for Connor’s care, his family knows it’s the best place for him.

“Every encounter, whether it be with the medical team, therapists, hospitality staff or even food services, has left us feeling cared for and supported,” Sarah says. “Connor isn’t just a patient, but the patient.” Connor himself says, “This is a place no one wants to be, but it’s the best place to be when you need it.”

Despite the challenges he continues to face, Connor remains resilient, funny and kind. He loves making his family smile and building miniature engines and tractors from LEGO. This holiday season, he is looking forward to baking Christmas cookies and celebrating with his family.

This holiday season, light up the life of patients like Connor. Give today. ✨

👋 Meet Oliver!

Born with posterior urethral valves (PUV), Oliver’s biggest medical complexity has always been his kidneys. In his first three hours of life, he coded on a medical flight - the first helicopter transport from his birth hospital to Nationwide Children’s in 20 years.

“A complete shock to the medical team. A complete shock to me,” his mom recalls.

Oliver spent 99 days in the NICU where he underwent 16 surgeries, ECMO, dialysis and a stroke. His family lived minute by minute, but eventually, Oliver stabilized.

Today, Oliver is seen by his Urology and Nephrology care team and hospital visits, procedures and medications have become part of their rhythm. Despite his complex health history, Oliver is your typical curious and energetic 6-year-old. He plays baseball, self-administers his treatments and excels at reading and math!

“He’s my miracle. My inspiration. He’s my why,” his mom says. 🧡

🦋 Remember Brady?!

Brady was born with pectus excavatum, a common condition in which his breastbone sinks into his chest as he grows. As he began puberty, it became clear he had a more severe case. Brady’s breastbone was sunk deep into his chest causing a bowl-like effect that put pressure on his lungs, affecting his breathing and his ability to play his favorite sport, soccer.

Brady's mom shared: “The pressure on his lungs led to him needing an inhaler for sports and one thing after another. We got to the point where our pediatrician said, ‘If you want to speak to somebody at Nationwide Children's, now is the time.’”

At 14, Brady met with Dr. Brian Kenney here at Nationwide Children's. With the support of his parents and Dr. Kenney, Brady decided to have corrective surgery his sophomore year.

During the eight-hour surgery, Dr. Kenney inserted two metal bars under Brady’s breastbone that will remain there for 3 years. After a 3-month recovery, Brady was back on the field playing soccer!

Brady is breathing easy now. He is in his senior year of high school and has committed to play soccer at John Carroll University in 2026. When he’s not at soccer practice or playing cards with his buddies, Brady helps at his parents’ optometry practice. Currently, he plans to follow in their footsteps and become an optometrist.

This holiday season, when you give to Light Up a Lawn, Light Up a Life, you are helping Nationwide Children’s support the dreams of patients like Brady. ✨
