🦋 Remember Knox?

Born with only half a heart, Knox was diagnosed with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS).

HLHS is a birth defect that affects normal blood flow through the heart and half of the heart is underdeveloped. This diagnosis requires three surgeries over several years.

Knox had his first procedure at just six days old. At six months, he had his second surgery, the most complex part of the treatment, where the heart has to be stopped and reconstructed. His final surgery was completed at age three.

Several years have passed since his last surgery and Knox is doing great! He is in second grade and loves playing sports, building Legos and cheering on his favorite team, the Miami Dolphins!

This Heart Month, learn about our Heart Center and the unique care patient's like Knox receive at the link below.

🦋 Meet Hadley. Hadley’s life began with a fight to breathe. Her lungs were those of a baby born at just 22 weeks - and from her first moments, she depended on intensive respiratory support.

Diagnosed with severe bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), Hadley's first days and weeks were filled with uncertainty, and her parents faced unimaginable fear as they were told local care options in Texas were running out.

With their daughter’s life on the line, Hadley’s family made the life-changing decision to leave everything familiar behind and travel from Texas to Ohio in search of hope. They placed their trust in Nationwide Children’s Hospital - home to the nation’s only BPD-specific unit and the most experienced BPD team in the world.

Watch Hadley's incredible journey from Texas to Ohio and finally... home! Visit the link in our comments to learn more about BPD care at Nationwide Children's.

🦋 Meet Milo! When Milo developed a severe cough, his parents took him to Nationwide Children’s Urgent Care. Not only was it close, but it was a place they already trusted with the treatment of their other kids. It was there that Milo was diagnosed with both respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and secondary bacterial pneumonia and was transferred to the emergency department.

RSV is the leading cause of hospitalization for infants in the United States, and for some babies, symptoms can become severe. Due to low oxygen levels, a high respiratory rate and increased work of breathing, Milo was admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU).

Milo was closely monitored and received breathing support while in the PICU. He improved quickly, moving from BiPAP to a high-flow nasal cannula, then low-flow oxygen and eventually, he was able to breathe on his own. After four days in the PICU, Milo was discharged, reunited with his twin sister and two older brothers and took a long nine-hour sleep.

Here is what Milo’s family had to say about their most recent experience: “I always feel that there is a strong community at Nationwide [Children's], including during this stay— I was so relieved to have so many doctors and nurses who treated us like family.”

Learn the signs and symptoms of RSV and how you can help protect your child at the link in our comments.

“The nature of a major children’s hospital is that we care for patients with a wide variety of congenital medical and surgical disorders. They can be as simple as a small skin tag, or as complex as a massive lymphatic malformation requiring multiple surgeries and multidisciplinary care. I really enjoy following kids along the spectrum of their care, and helping guide families through this very emotional journey.” -Jonathan Grischkan, MD, Physician, Otolaryngology
