🦋 This Thanksgiving, Canaan's parents have so much to be thankful for.

Born at just 22 weeks and weighing 1 pound, 2 ounces, Canaan’s chances of survival were only 50%. But at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, he received the expert, around-the-clock care that gave him a fighting chance. From the moment he was transported to the NICU, every hour was a victory — guided by a Nationwide Children’s Neonatal team dedicated to saving babies few others can.

For 173 days, Canaan’s family and NICU care team worked side by side, celebrating each milestone that brought him closer to home.

“NICU nurses are absolute blessings,” shared Canaan's dad, Tommy. “The care wasn’t just taking his vitals or giving his meds or monitoring him. They made a scrapbook of pictures of him for us. It was comforting knowing that the nurses would take care of him like he was their own kid.”

Finally, after 173 days in the NICU, Canaan came home.

Today, Canaan receives supportive oxygen through a nasal cannula and has monthly appointments with the Comprehensive Center for Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia. He is meeting the expected milestones for his adjusted age. He is now over 13 pounds and has a feisty personality. “He’s proven since day one that he is a little fighter,” shares his mom, Morgan. “He will tell you how he feels!”

This holiday season, light up the lives of patients like Canaan. ✨

🦋 Remember Raleigh?! When Raleigh was 2 months old, he developed respiratory symptoms that worried his family. His mom, Eva, brought him to Nationwide Children's Hospital Urgent Care where doctors suspected heart failure. When an X-ray showed Raleigh’s heart was enlarged, he was immediately sent to Nationwide Children's Emergency Department. Additional testing revealed he had severe dilated cardiomyopathy, a condition in which the left ventricle, the heart's main pumping chamber, is both enlarged and not pumping well.

Medication was the first course of action for Raleigh. It quickly became clear that he wasn’t improving, and his heart was not responding to the medication.

The next option was to support Raleigh’s heart mechanically. His parents and care team decided they would proceed with an operation that would put him on a ventricular assist device (VAD) called a Berlin heart. The Berlin heart would assist and take over as Raleigh’s left ventricle and allow proper blood circulation throughout the body. The procedure would help him grow while they waited on the long-term solution, a new heart.

After 246 days on the transplant list, eating, developing and playing while supported on his Berlin heart, Raleigh and his family received word that he would receive a new heart!

Now Raleigh is 2 years old and a healthy, thriving toddler. Raleigh loves making music; he received a drum kit for his birthday and likes to play the “drummies” whenever he can.

“Our family is grateful for every moment we have with him!” Raleigh’s mom Eva says. “Our hearts are full of continued love and deep gratitude for our team at Nationwide Children’s and for Raleigh’s selfless organ donor.”

This holiday season, light up the lives of patients like Raleigh. Give today. ✨

👋 Meet Hayden!

At four months old, Hayden’s parents thought she had a respiratory virus. Her cry sounded weak, she struggled to feed and her breathing grew concerning. As her condition worsened, she was admitted to the PICU at Nationwide Children’s.

What first looked like a respiratory illness quickly pointed to something far more rare: infant botulism. Most parents only hear about it in connection with honey, but Hayden’s case was environmental- she simply inhaled the spores somewhere in her surroundings, something her parents didn’t even know was possible. Infant botulism can be easy to miss, with early symptoms like a weak cry, trouble feeding or constipation often resembling more common illnesses.

Throughout her two-month hospital stay, Hayden’s care focused on helping her breathe, eat and regain strength. She received a treatment to help shorten recovery for infant botulism, but because her diagnosis took time, the effects weren’t immediate.

Slowly, she began to improve and eventually, she was able to come off the ventilator and take steps toward going home. By the time she left Nationwide Children’s, her care team had become like extended family and her parents still talk about them with deep gratitude.

Today, Hayden is a joyful, energetic 6-year-old who loves dancing and playing with her sisters. She and her family are grateful every single day. “Hayden is healthy and thriving because of the incredible care she received at Nationwide Children’s,” her mom said. “We’ll never forget what they did for her and for our whole family.”
