“Help yourself to help your horse”

What do I mean by this? Recently I saw a post talking about all of the ways a rider can affect their horse, so I wanted to jump on here and touch on some things!

✨Balance ✨

Having good balance while riding can make such a big difference in the way your horse goes. Staying centered in the saddle, while ensuring that you are not leaning, bracing, or pulling on the reins for support are all things that will effect your ride. When a rider is balanced, the horse is able to move freely and to stay relaxed while working towards a goal. When you are riding be sure to take some time to focus on how your body is affecting the horse. Even small adjustments over a few rides will make a huge impact!

✨Emotions✨

A lot of the time riders will allow their emotions to get in the way of their progress. Sometimes they won’t even notice this is happening. Often times when the rider is stressed, angry, or sad they will ride more tense and get agitated easily. In turn, this can cause the horse to get anxious, frustrated, or impatient. When you put your foot in the stirrup, it is super important that you take a deep breath and focus on the task at hand. Remember that your horse is not the cause of anything happening outside the arena, therefore you should make sure to have all of your focus on them.

While there are a million more ways a person can affect their horse, I wanted to touch on these two! If you can be 1% better each ride, it will not take long for your horse to follow suit and before you know it, you will be so pleased with the progress you will make!

Muscle Monday! Welcome back to the series where we speak on one muscle each week!

This week we will go over the Brachiosaphalicus Muscle! 💜

The equine Brachiocephalicus muscle runs from the head and neck to the upper forelimb and plays a key role in forward movement and balance. It helps extend the shoulder and advance the forelimb during motion, while also assisting in bending the neck to the side when the leg is fixed. Tightness or restriction in this muscle can affect stride length, head carriage, and overall performance, making it an important area to assess in working and performance horses!

Are you actually doing the things you say you’re doing?

You bought the supplements…
But are you feeding them every single day, at the right dose?

You bought the therapy devices…
But are you actually following through doing them consistently?

You say you want your horse to feel their best…
But are you showing up for them the way you expect them to show up for you in the arena?

Because here’s the hard truth:

Results don’t come from good intentions.
They come from disciplined, boring, consistent action.

That $300/month in supplements doesn’t work if you “forget” 3 days a week.

That maintenance program doesn’t help if you only do it when something is already wrong.

That conditioning plan doesn’t build a strong horse if you skip it when it’s inconvenient.

Horses thrive on consistency. Their bodies respond to patterns.

And the difference between average and elite programs?

Let’s talk the importance of proper hoof care!

Hoof care is essential for ALL horses because their hooves support the entire body and directly affect comfort, movement, and performance. Regular trimming and monitoring help prevent cracks, abscesses, imbalance, and lameness, while early detection of issues like thrush or white line disease can stop small problems from becoming serious. Proper hoof care keeps horses sound, comfortable, and happy!

What are some things you can do to help your horses hooves?

- Clean them out regularly. Cleaning out your horses hooves daily is a great way to watch for any signs of discomfort!

- Use hoof oils when there is no moisture. This keeps the hooves from cracking!

- Stay on a consistent trim cycle. Be sure to ask your farrier any questions you might have! For Most horses a cycle of 6-8 weeks works well, but you might have to lessen the time in between trims for several different reasons!

Welcome to week 3 of “Muscle Monday”! If you have been following along we have covered both the Trapezius and the Semitendinosus so far!

Today we have the “Masseter”! Learn more below!
⬇️⬇️⬇️

The Masseter is the strongest muscle in a horses head. It is responsible for aiding the horse in moving its jaw! If the Masseter is compromised a horse might have difficulty chewing, staying collected during a ride and accepting a bit. The Masseter could be compromised for a number of reasons including, but not limited to, dental issues, Vitamin E deficiency and trauma to the jaw!

If you believe your horse might be struggling due to a stiff or sore Masseter be sure to reach out!

Week Two of “Muscle Monday”! This fun series will give you a little information regarding your horses muscles each week! Follow along to learn more!

Today’s Muscle is the “Semitendinosus Muscle”!

The Semitendinosus muscle plays a key role in the hind end. It is one of three muscles that makes up the hamstrings! This muscle effects and supports movement through the hips, hocks, and stifles while allowing for forward and backward movement, kicking, and stabilization through the pelvis! When the Semitendinosus muscle is compromised it can lead to Fibrotic Myopathy which is a mechanical lameness that will cause the horse to walk with a slapping or marching motion. Often found in Reining and Cutting horses due repetitive stops and turns as well as horses that have experienced different traumas such as a kick, fall or getting cast in a stall.

Please reach out with any questions or concerns! And comment below if there are any specific muscles you’d like to read more on!
