November is Family Stories Month.
As we gather for the holidays, it’s the perfect time to share the stories that make our families who they are. Ask questions, listen closely, and record those memories—big or small. Adventures, traditions, romances, and even the funny little moments deserve to be preserved for the generations still to come.

A Sweet + Surprising Piece of Cemetery History for Babies

SCULPTURE IN CEMETERIES

If you’ve ever walked through a historic cemetery and noticed a little baby nestled in a scallop shell, you’ve found one of the most unique and tender monument styles of the Victorian era: the baby-in-a-half-shell memorial.

From the 1870s through World War I, these sculptures were placed almost exclusively on the graves of children under six. Monument artisans—from local stone carvers to Vermont marble companies to even the Sears, Roebuck catalog—offered versions in many sizes and styles, making them accessible to families across the U.S.

Why a baby in a shell?

Victorian families saw childhood as precious, innocent, and fleeting. With heartbreaking child-mortality rates, parents often chose a symbol that blended comfort, faith, and imagination. The scallop shell represented transformation and safe passage, while the peacefully sleeping baby suggested innocence and the hope of awakening in the hereafter.

These monuments also echoed the era’s beloved children’s books and illustrations—fantastical, gentle, and dreamlike. And because rural cemeteries were family gathering places, children themselves often encountered these markers during Sunday walks and picnics.

Today, these sculptures stand as touching reminders of how deeply families loved and honored their little ones more than a century ago.

A monument is a deeply personal and beautiful tribute. We don't "sell" from a catalog, we design with compassion.

Thank you to all Veterans for your service!

Small gestures. Big gratitude. ❤️🤍💙
Here are a few simple, meaningful ways to honor those who’ve served:

1️⃣ Visit a veterans memorial or cemetery and take a quiet moment of reflection.
2️⃣ Personally thank a veteran — a few sincere words can mean a lot.
3️⃣ Support a veterans organization through a small donation or volunteer time.
4️⃣ Learn a veteran’s story or read about military history, then share what you discover.
5️⃣ Fly the American flag proudly and properly today.
