San Diego Classic – March 28

WCR was proud to have two members participate in the Survivor Classic on March 28. The event featured two 8+ boats and a mixed quad, bringing together an inspiring group of survivors. Great to have Bonnie along for support!

As in the previous year, we were fortunate to have boats generously lent to us by ZLAC, the oldest women’s boathouse in the world - we are so grateful for their continued support!

We had a great practice row on Friday, taking the boats out to the race venue and getting a feel for the conditions. Saturday greeted us with temperatures in the low 70s and some choppy water - classic Mission Bay! It made for a fun and memorable race, especially being out there together with such an incredible group of survivors. As last year, we were honored to have Susan Francia (gold medalist 2008, 2012) presented us with our medals!

Afterward, we rowed back to ZLAC, though the quad had a bit of an adventure with the choppy conditions having to make a stop at the beach to empty out the water before finishing the trip!

This one is in the books! Til next year!

WCR OPEN HOUSE RESCHEDULED TO 3/23

Due to the potential for severe weather we are rescheduling tonight’s Open House to next Monday 3/23 at 6:30 pm.

TNT Sunday - WCR members Elizabeth, Jill, Karin, Odezza, and Suzy, with Emily in the cox seat, nearly had their own 8+ crew today. Great rowing and energy, proving that when WCR participates, we do so with strength. 💪

And great to see Odezza back in the house! 😍

Weighing in on our Weight/Strength sessions…

Last week John’s assistant Evelyn (aka the mini boss / daughter) was on hand and showed us a thing or two on the exercises.

Thuy knocked it out of the park with the trap bar deadlift - way to go, Thuy! 💪

This Wednesday turned into a semi-private session with just the four of us, which meant plenty of workout time and some individual coaching from John - always a bonus.

He even brought out the Concept2 Dynamic RowErg for water rowers. On the Dynamic erg, the rower’s body mass stays relatively stationary while parts of the machine move in response to the rowing motion, making it feel a bit more like being in a boat on the water.

Shipley Tanks 2026
And that’s a wrap for this year as we transition to evening rows this week.

In our final instructional night at the tanks we weere joined by WBC members Tanya, Tamara, and Lisa, and it turned out to be a great session. With smaller numbers, everyone was able to get some extra time in the boat - always a nice bonus for practice and refining technique.

And it wouldn’t be the same without the obligatory group selfie by Emily! 😍

Monday we were back at Shipley for an indoor tank session - always a great way to kick off the week! The night was highlighted by the return of Michelle. It was so good to see her back!

We started with an erg warm-up before getting into the boats for some sculling work, including a series of drills to focus on technique and timing.

Next week we’ll switch things up and be sweeping, looking forward to another great session! 💪

Elizabeth was inspired by us last week and jumped in to do the workout while in SC!! you go, girl! You inspire us right back!

Last week Karin was pictured solo, but this week she found herself a buddy 🤣 Always more fun together!

We were also joined by Devon from WCR DC, who’s looking to make the move to Philly and join our group — welcome, Devon! We’re so glad you lifted with us.

Weight/Strength Session #1 at The Barn 💪

What a great kickoff to our first Weight/Strength session! John led us through a dynamic almost circuit style workout that kept everyone moving and motivated from start to finish. Each station focused on different muscle groups, giving us a true full-body workout - legs, arms, core, and everything in between.

Oh course we started with a warm on the Erg.

John offered options so everyone could push themselves at their own level. There was great focus, lots of effort, and encouragement all around. It was great to see everyone step up, try new movements, and power through.

If this first session is any indication, we’re off to a strong start (And we will be feeling the affects tomorrow😊)
