Canine Motion Care Mobile Canine Rehab Services | Serving Maine and New Hampshire

Hi, I’m Mikaela, the founder of Canine Motion Care and a licensed physical therapist with a passion for helping dogs live their best lives. I’m certified in canine rehabilitation through the Canine Rehabilitation Institute (CCRT) and bring a unique combination of human physical therapy expertise and specialized canine training to every session. My journey in health and movement began with a Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science from the University of Southern Maine, followed by my Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Plymouth State University. Along the way, I served in the Army National Guard—first as an enlisted soldier and later as a commissioned Medical Service Officer . That experience deepened my commitment to service, precision, and care—values that now shape my approach to canine rehabilitation. At home, I’m lucky to share life with my husband and our dog, Finley—who continually reminds me why I do what I do. I believe in treating every dog like family and supporting their people with education, empathy, and expert care. Whether your dog is healing, aging, or just needs a little extra help getting around, I’m here to guide the way with a thoughtful, hands-on approach that puts your dog’s comfort and progress first.

Our newest CMC graduate! 🌟🐕🎓

Blossom, a 2-year-old English Bulldogge, came to Canine Motion Care after two months of persistent front-limb lameness. Her dedicated owner had already explored holistic supplements, acupuncture and chiropractic care before turning to canine rehabilitation. After four months of consistent rehab, Blossom regained her strength and mobility — and is now back to her charming, mischievous self, spreading joy (and a little mayhem) wherever she goes.

Congrats to our most recent CMC graduate - Nealy! 🎓🐕

Nealy came to Canine Motion Care with a two-year history of intermittent front-limb lameness, suspected to be related to supraspinatus and biceps tendon tendinopathy. After four months of consistent rehabilitation, Nealy made a full recovery and was cleared to return to all her favorite activities. She now enjoys chasing tennis balls and swimming in the river — a happy, lovable pup with many adventures still ahead.

Canine Motion Care is proud to share that Dr. Mikaela had the honor of being able to make a generous donation to Harvest Hills Animal Shelter!

This contribution was made possible through the incredible love and support of her friends and family. Instead of traditional gifts, guests were invited to contribute toward a donation to Harvest Hills—both at her bridal shower and wedding.

This cause is especially close to Mikaela’s heart. Her beloved dogs, Finley (brown and white coonhound mix), adopted in May 2024, and Buddy (yellow lab mix), adopted in March 2016 and remembered fondly after his passing in April 2024, both came from Harvest Hills.

Buddy and Finley's stories fuel Mikaela’s passion for bringing canine rehab to her community and giving back to help more animals find their forever homes.

Exercise & Weight Loss in Overweight Dogs with Osteoarthritis 🐕

Study: “Effects of caloric restriction and a moderate or intense physiotherapy program for treatment of lameness in overweight dogs with osteoarthritis”
(AVMA Journals)

What was done: Overweight/obese dogs with OA were put on a weight loss diet, plus either a home-based (“basic”) PT program or an “intensive” PT program including TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation). Outcomes measured included gait analysis, ground reaction forces etc.

What was found: Both groups lost weight, but the intensive PT group had greater improvements in mobility, symmetry of ground reaction forces, and reduced lameness.

What it means: For many dogs, management of OA doesn’t just mean pain meds. Combining weight loss + therapeutic exercise/PT (including modalities) provides significantly better functional improvement.

-- IVDD + Post-Op Rehab Improves Outcomes vs Surgery Alone --

Study: “Canine thoracolumbar intervertebral disk herniation and rehabilitation therapy after surgical decompression”

📄PubMed -
What was done: Dogs with thoracolumbar intervertebral disk herniation (IVDH) had surgery + rehab (electrotherapy, infrared therapy, standing training, reflex work) vs surgery alone.

What was found: The rehabilitated group had a much higher rate of “successful neurologic outcome” (≈86.5%) vs non-rehab group (≈52.2%).

What it means: Rehab isn’t just a “nice add-on” but often changes outcomes after serious spinal surgery. Use protocols that include reflex training, standing work, etc.
