This KTS Advocacy success story was simply too good not to share and great strategies for everyone!

After facing $165,812 in medical bills from one hospital system and its affiliated providers, I was able to help my client reduce that amount to just $1,966...a 99% savings! These bills were the result of a serious cancer diagnosis, which made an already overwhelming situation even more stressful.

So how was it done?
First, I encouraged her to apply for financial assistance, even though she earned a salary through the restaurant she owned. Despite having a decent income, she was uninsured while undergoing cancer treatment, and the hospital approved her for an 80% discount. While that was a great start, I then requested an itemized bill so we could carefully review the charges remaining and see if further reductions were possible. To my surprise, the hospital then approved her for 100% charity care under a catastrophic clause in the policy and completely wrote off the entire balance. 🤠

The final step was getting all the providers associated with the hospital stay to honor that same write-off....not necessarily something that providers will do, but you don't know unless you ask. After a long process (and even dealing with accounts that had gone to collections), I was thrilled when I heard today that the last remaining balance of $3,820 was written off, honoring the hospital charity. 🥳

Persistence matters and anyone can follow these steps. When additional support is needed, a skilled advocate can provide meaningful support to individuals in the community and employees in the workplace, saving time and reducing stress for everyone involved!💪🥳🙂

How often do providers miscode preventive care claims? More than you’d think! Preventive services, like wellness visits for adults and children, including labs, should be covered at 100%. But if the provider doesn’t code the visit correctly, insurance may treat it as diagnostic instead.

What does that mean for employees? Instead of full coverage, they could be hit with unexpected costs - deductibles, coinsurance, or out-of-pocket charges, just like a regular visit. It’s easy to blame the insurance company, but in many cases, the issue starts with the provider’s coding.
