❌The Toxic Chemical Leaderboard ❌
First up, let’s start with the WHYs...
What does endocrine mean, and what does the system do? The endocrine system is made up of all the body’s hormones and regulates all of the body's processes from conception through adulthood and into old age! That’s a lot of impact! This includes our metabolism function and blood sugar levels, the growth and function of our reproductive system, and even our brain 🧠 and nervous system development.
Now, we need to ask.. what exactly is an Endocrine Disruptor? According to the National Institute of Environmental Health Science, “endocrine disruptors are chemicals that may interfere with the body’s endocrine system and produce adverse developmental, reproductive, neurological, and immune effects in both humans and wildlife. The damage is believed to be most severe during prenatal or early pregnancy exposure.”
💥 Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals:
❗️Increase Production of certain hormones
❗️Imitate hormones
❗️Interfere with hormone signaling
❗️Compete with essential nutrients
❗️Accumulate in the organs that produce hormones
❗️Decrease production of other hormones
❗️Turn some hormones into others
❗️Tell cells to die prematurely
❗️Bind to essential hormones
I talk about this not at all to scare us but so we can be AWARE and empowered to make the best decisions possible! The list below shows just some of the thousands of chemicals, or mixtures of chemicals, that can interfere with our bodies delicate hormone system, which can set us up for disease. They can be found all through the environment, and also in our daily products we use... there are over 85,000+ manufactured chemicals used in the USA!!
Over the last 25 years, much research has been done to take account of the different health concerns related to endocrine disruption. A few of the concerns are:
•Male and female reproductive disorders
•Obesity
•Diabetes
•Neurological impacts
•Premature death
•Cancers
•Endometriosis
•Osteoporosis
•Immune disorders
•Thyroid disorders
To me this can be super frustrating but also super motivating. I was definitely impacted by many factors, including personal care toxins and environmental toxins, so it is super important to me to make others aware. Clearly, with the lack of regulation on these products, our government is not doing the best job in protecting us from these. This means, it is up to us to make safe and wise choices in the products we use and that we give to our friends and family!!
Below are the “dirty dozen” toxic chemicals that we can avoid to help minimize our body burden and hormone disruption.
