When open or maiden mares are placed under lights starting November 1 they will normally be cycling by early February when breeding season opens.

In other words, the mare’s ovulatory season is advanced by approximately 40-60 days by maintaining mares under conditions of 16 hours of light (16 light : 8 hours dark).
