What is a Peer Support Specialist?

Peer Support Specialists are people who’ve actually been there — and chose to turn their lived experience into hope for others. 💛

They are trained professionals who use their personal journey with mental health, recovery, housing instability, substance use, or other life challenges to walk alongside someone who’s navigating similar experiences.

Peer support is powerful because it’s built on mutuality, not hierarchy. It’s one person saying, “I’ve been where you are, and things can get better.”

Research shows peer support can:
• Increase hope and engagement in services
• Reduce hospitalizations
• Improve quality of life
• Strengthen community connection

At its heart, peer support is about relationships. It’s about turning pain into purpose and lived experience into support in a personal way that is different than a clinical setting.
