Huge congratulations to Rainy Sun for giving a wonderful talk on her first-year PhD project! 🌟

We found that Mandarin-English bilingual children’s narrative performance, or how well they produce stories, depends on the elicitation method (whether they tell the story themselves vs. they retell the story after hearing an adult model) and the language used (Mandarin vs. English). We also discussed clinical implications for speech-language pathologists who use narrative sample analysis to assess language skills in this population.

We’re so proud of you, Rainy! 💛📚

Shoutout to our wonderful guest speaker!

Dr. Fiona Maxwell is a assistant Director of Graduate Career Development at UChicagoGRAD, she is a dedicated career advisor for University of Chicago graduate students in the Humanities and Social Sciences. In addition to supporting professional development programming, she specializes in public speaking and writing coaching and contributes to GRAD’s Communication Lab.

Today, she walked us through improv-based exercises designed to strengthen our scientific communication skills, from adapting our tone to different audiences to thinking on our feet with curiosity and clarity.

Huge thank you to Dr. Maxwell for an engaging and inspiring session!

It’s DLD Awareness Day!

Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) affects about 1 in 14 people, making it difficult to understand or use language, often without visible signs.

Today, we join others around the world in recognizing DLD and the importance of language awareness. 💜

🎃 Fall Fun Meets Language Learning!
This fall, try painting a face on a pumpkin to support your child’s language development. As you add features like eyes, a nose, and a mouth, name each part and describe what you’re doing together. Simple everyday conversations like this help children learn new words, practice taking turns, and build early communication skills!🍂🎨

Congratulations Leen Al-Jame for receiving the CCF Spark SPUR Award for her poster presented at the Summer Platform for Undergraduate Research (SPUR)! 🎉

Leen presented her study, Sensitivity of Developmental Assessment to S*x Differences in Early Autism Traits in Preschool-Aged Children. Autistic girls are often diagnosed later than boys, and one contributing factor may be that current diagnostic and language assessments do not fully capture how autism manifests differently across sexes. In this project, Leen, together with her doctoral student mentor, McKenzie, analyzed autistic children’s scores on autism and language assessments to examine sex-based differences. Her work is an important step toward developing less biased assessment tools that can support earlier identification and improve access to services for autistic girls.💡 👏

We are so proud of her and all of her hard work!

Our research team is always growing! Meet the 2025 LILAC Lab team! 🪻

We updated our annual lab photo and—true to tradition—snapped one professional shot and one slightly less professional one 😄 Swipe to see our serious science faces… and our not-so-serious ones.

We are the Language Interaction & Language Acquisition in Children (LILAC) Lab at the University of Texas at Dallas’s School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences. Our research explores how parent-child interactions support early language development in autistic children, bilingual children, and monolingual neurotypical children.

We’re so excited for another year of research, mentorship, collaboration, and all the joyful, chaotic moments that come with studying little human beans! 🫘

🚀 We had an amazing time at the AUsome Moms Fair () last weekend connecting with families and celebrating the many ways autistic children learn!

🔅 At our booth, we shared a glimpse into our research at the LILAC Lab, where we study how autistic children—and their peers—acquire language through everyday interactions. Our work aims to better understand the diverse paths of language development and support communication growth in all children.

🌟 Thank you to everyone who stopped by to learn more about our work and to celebrate neurodiversity with us!
