Karuna Fund Raiser - for Subha

Karuna Fund Raiser - for Subha For Donations & Tickets www.highoctavez.net/subha Although he showed no symptoms of the disease, it was diagnosed due to excessively low blood platelet count.

Subha Narayan Sarcar, a graduate student at university of Texas Dallas, was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia, a type of blood cancer, in September 2011. This was disrupting the healing of an existing wound. He is currently undergoing treatment at Tata Medical Center in Kolkata, India. He has undergone two rounds of chemotherapy and further needs a bone marrow transplant, the cost of which could be in excess of $100,000. A sincere effort from the community to raise money to help Subha get a bone marrow transplant. Lets have a fun filled night with family and friends on Jan 8th at the Irving Arts Center with Dance, Music and Much more.....

Talked to Subha a few minutes back. Still needs to go for his check up and blood test every 2 weeks. Other than a cold and some stomach upset, hes doing really well. Hope this new year brings more peace and happiness to him and his family.

Subha is back home after his allogenic transplant (bone marrow transplant).. For the past month, he had check ups every week.. His blood counts are improving and doctors have advised him to go for his checkups twice a month. So, thats a big improvement. Lets hope and pray his health keeps improving.

Subha had undergone bone marrow transaplant on August 22, 2012. The hospital found a match from Brazil. But, Subha was not feeling very well by then and the doctors thought that they had to go ahead with something immediately. Even though his sister was not a perfect match, they went ahead and used her stem cells to go through the procedure

Subha had gone through some heavy radiation / high dosage chemotherapy in order to eliminate whatever bone marrow was left, after which his sister's stem cells were injected. Since it was not a good match, hes not totally stabilized yet. After the transplant, hes been going through some tough times - issues with heart, kidneys, intestines and so on. Subha is extremely weak at the moment.

His platelet count in his blood has started to pick up a little which is the only encouraging thing at the moment. Hes still in the observation room where no one is allowed as he is at risk for catching infections easily due to lack of immunity

Since last four months Subha's docs were asking when he was going back to the USA and so on. So finally he started the procedure of resuming studies and everything was set and finally got his VISA on 18th July as well. But when he went for the check up on 11th July in the hospital, his blood counts were all good except the platelet count (which was 43,000 down from 85,000 the previous month). So, the doc said that it might be due to some viral infection and asked him to come and get check up done after two weeks, on 25th. Subha went on 25th July for his tests, again all the other blood counts were good (WBC-5600, Neutrophul- 47%, RBC-4.1, Haemoglobin- 13.1) but platelet came down to 26,000. So they did a bone marrow biopsy the same day on 25th. Today on 26th July, he talked to his doctor over the phone and he said that he found 8% blast cells in the bone marrow and considers it as a Relapse state.

So the next step will be to search in the international bone marrow registry to see if there is any update in the result, and according to that they are going to set up chemotherapy coupled with bone marrow transplantation. Not much details yet

So yes, after all these days of preparing himself mentally for the comeback (after a year) and all those things that he planned to do; it is a real heart breaker to hear the news and to again prepare himself mentally for the next phase of battle.

Though doc said that the whole thing can be done in about 5-6 months and then recovery phase, the exact time period is not known. But there is hope, at least he would like to believe that even now..............

Talked to Subha Sarcar today. Everything looks good. Hes doing great. No issues as of now. Waiting on his I-20 from UTD and planning his trip back to the US.. His next doctor's appointment is June 11th. Couple more months and we might be able to see him back here in Dallas, trying to finish his Ph.D..

Subha has a check up with his doctor on May 11th. He is doing alright at the moment. His chemotherapy treatments are complete. In case of a relapse, he will need a bone marrow transplant. He has started his paperwork to come to Dallas this fall to finish off his Ph.D at University of Texas in Dallas (UTD)
