I get this question a lot. My child doesn't engage in play with me, how do I play with him?

One of the best ways to play with your child is through the OWL method.
1. Observe
2. Wait
3. Listen

Sometimes following your child's lead and meeting them where they are is the best method to learn language, build connection with your child, and watch their language grow.

If you need assistance with better understanding this model, reach out for parent training by calling or texting at 469-909-2031

I have heard so many times: "PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System) is a pre-requisite to AAC" or "He's not doing well with AAC, I think we need to go to PECS."

My response to these statements is "Why?"

1. PECS is very limited in the communication functions a child can elicit. Children are taught to request over and over again. Requesting is an important communication function, however, there is so much more to language than requesting objects. A robust AAC system can provide them opportunities to communicate more language: describing, labeling, directing actions, etc.

2. PECS limits the vocabulary a child is able to access. The child is limited to the pictures provided at the time, and that may not be what the child wants to communicate. You don't know what the child is trying to communicate, so they need as many options as possible.

3. PECS is very compliance based and requires image discrimination as pictures are often moved around. A robust AAC system can decrease overall cognitive load and make communication easier because a child knows exactly where the word they want is located. Pictures are not moved around on a robust AAC system, so access eventually becomes quick as the child learns the device.

Did you know speech therapy can target more than just speech sounds and language?

Therapy can target picky eating, oral function, cognition, literacy, and so much more. If your child has ADHD, Dyslexia, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Cerebral Palsy, or other diagnoses, it is very possible that speech therapy may be needed to assist in cognition, executive functioning, speech production, or even feeding function. Reach out for a speech consultation by calling 469.909.2031.
