A newly released study found that even just a few sessions in indoor tanning beds can cause DNA damage in skin cells—significantly increasing the risk of melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer.

Our U.S. Dermatology Partners Bethesda Dermatopathology Lab (BDL) team had a great showing at this year’s Virginia Dermatological Society Annual Meeting! Our delegation, including Dermatologist/Dermatopathologist Dr. Jonathan J. Lee, M.D., enjoyed connecting with clinicians and colleagues, sharing how BDL delivers excellent and timely diagnostic reporting to facilitate optimal patient care. We were especially proud of Georgetown University medical students Lillian Spear and Zoe Ting, who presented our translational research showcasing novel histopathologic clues to mechanical alopecia. Their work highlights BDL’s commitment to advancing histopathology basics to improve diagnostic accuracy in particularly challenging areas of dermatopathology, such as alopecia!

Attendees also had fun with our “Stains & Gains” Dermpath Challenge, testing their skills on unknown slides. Thank you to the VDS for a fantastic event. BDL is honored to continue supporting dermatologists and their clinician colleagues across the Mid-Atlantic region with high-quality, timely, and accurate diagnoses.
