Craig C Callewart, MD is an Orthopeadic spinal specialist who uses therapy, medications, injections, back braces and surgery to treat painful conditions of the neck (cervical spine), upper back (thoracic spine) and lower back (lumbar spine). His practice includes adolescents & adults, and has practiced in Dallas for 25 years. Many patients come to him with “failed spinal surgery syndrome,” which happens when a former surgery does not heal properly or a new problem develops in addition to the original problem. Experience, expertise, training as well as “horse sense” are combined to deal with these complex cases. Patients come to this practice because it is distinctly different than the way most medical care is practiced today. Our phones are answered 24/7 by a human being, our clinic has one physician, and staff know the patients personally. The practice is independently owned by Dr Callewart, so he is free to use the best hospitals, imaging centers, and physician associates in Dallas, as he is not required to refer patients to anywhere. Patients may see him for a “pinched nerve” in the neck causing neck pain, shoulder or shoulder blade pain, arm pain, forearm pain, or hand pain. Some complain of numbness and tingling in the hands or they may have trouble sleeping or trouble driving because of neck stiffness. Nerve pinching is can be caused by a “slipped disc,” “bulging disc,” “herniated disc” or by a calcium deposit causing a bone spur on the nerve. In medical terms, this process of the disc joint going “bad” is known as “degeneration of the disc.”

Likewise, patients can have pinched nerves in the mid or lower back that feel like “kidney pain,” “hip pain,” “thigh pain,” “leg pain,” or “foot pain.” Pinched nerves in the spine can produce leg cramps at night or restless leg syndrome. Pinched nerves can result in balance difficulty, neuropathy, difficulty urinating or trouble walking. The other group of patients that come to Dr Callewart for treatment may have trouble standing up straight or who have their “chin on chest” due to spinal curvature or “hips out of place.” Sometime this is due to a growth problem, prior injury or osteoporosis. Dr Callewart’s high level of expertise in minimally invasive surgery allows some patients who have surgery (less than 10% of his clinic visits) to be treated as outpatient cases. For the major reconstructive surgeries, he uses two specialty hospitals that are top rated tops in the country for their expertise, technology, and low infection rate.
