The world has been CHAOS for the past year. Readjusting, adapting, dealing with the mental health consequences of a pandemic, still dedicate time to fitness, family, health... it all has been rough, it all has been STRESSFUL!🤯
I am a dietitian that firmly believes in understanding the whole picture before advising a client, and what I find more and more is that everybody is dealing with ❌moderately high levels of stress❌that affect sleep 💤and relationships and (from a less tangible, more biochemical standpoint) our body composition , 🥗🍟food choices and metabolism.
Let’s start from the infamous ⚠️CORTISOL⚠️ aka STRESS HORMONE. When cortisol is high every day (due to chronic stress) our body tries to do one thing: 🆘SURVIVE the ☢️threatening☢️ state of stress and keep the main organs functioning by sparing carbohydrates (your body’s favorite source of fuel)
It does so by converting PROTEIN into CARBOHYDRATES (‼️in short‼️you keep the fat and burn your muscle... 😱pretty disappointing considering all the efforts you are putting in at the gym 🏋🏽♂️right?🥲)
▶️NOW LET’S REFLECT
Since your body loves carbs 😋 for energy and when in danger it does all it can to quickly make more, it only makes sense that it would make us crave sugary snacks/foods 🍰 🧁 🍭 🍫 for quick energy! So.... THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH YOU for wanting those foods, you just might need to take a closer look at your daily routines/interactions/thoughts etc. to see what you can do to put that cortisol back in check. 😉
