Will snipping it take away your pain?

A lingual frenectomy (aka, tongue-tie release) can be really therapeutic for improving breathing issues, sleeping issues, chronic TMJ pain, chronic neck pain, swallowing issues, chewing issues and more.

When they are warranted, they are 🔥 however, sometimes people use it as a quick fix …but don’t get long term results.

Working with a myofunctional therapist is a great way to make sure you’re on the right track.

There’s a lot more we could discuss here, but the purpose of this post it to just stimulate thought and conversation 📚

The tongue connection continued 👅

The other day we chatted about the TMJ/pelvic floor connection. Now let’s chat about a more direct connection the tongue has to other parts of the body and what to do if you think you should pursue that connection.

is an amazing and underrecognized resource. Often times you hear about it in younger kids who have speech issues or major dental concerns. IMO anyone could benefit from myo the same way they can benefit from any type of exercise anywhere in their body. If you want to get more specific though, here are some indicators you could be a candidate for myofunctional therapy:

•Chronic mouth breathing
•Tongue resting low instead of on the roof of the mouth
•Tongue thrust when swallowing
•Jaw pain, clicking, or TMJ symptoms
•Snoring or poor sleep quality
•Forward head posture
•Speech difficulties (e.g., with S, R, or L sounds)
•Dental issues despite orthodontic treatment
•Chronic neck, shoulder, or pelvic floor tension
•Difficulty nasal breathing during exercise

Myofunctional therapists can come from all types of backgrounds. The most common are dental hygienists, speech language pathologists, physical therapists, and occupational therapists.

Anyway, now you know! Drop questions in the comments ⬇️

It’s all connected 🩻

But does it actually matter?

Don’t get me wrong, I nerd out on all the cool parallels that exist between the pelvis and cranium, the pelvic floor muscles and the vocal folds. Really cool.

But what does that actually mean for us on a functional level? I have patients coming in wanting to chase a connection (because they heard about it on social media), which is so fun, but from the 30,000 ft view is that going to give them the biggest bang for their buck (esp if they’re paying out of pocket for a session).

My role is to facilitate the process of healing and optimization. I was always honor a patient’s curiosity, but we want to keep our eye on the prize at the same time.

There is a direct fascial connection, but it doesn’t mean it’s anchoring anything down so to speak. Sometimes it is, but a lot less frequent than one would think.

There are first threads that run from the cranium to the pelvis. Super cool, but again, just because the connection exists doesn’t mean it’s a problem.

The way we hold stress in our bodies, IMO and in my clinical experience is something that gives us the biggest bang for our buck when we’re trying to help someone improve pain and meet a goal.

Like always, take it all with a grain of thought and hopefully this prompts curiosity 😊

Relaxation snack 😌

Not everyone, but a lot of people’s TMJ and headache issues comes from muscle tension. That tension can be caused by several things, one of which is not fully relaxing throughout the day.

Giving yourself respite from holding your muscles tight can reduce the intensity of tension headaches and jaw clenching.

Remember, this is a free tip…sometimes it’ll be a home run, but if it’s not, it might not be the right tip for you 🤷🏻‍♀️ don’t despair, continue searching and advocating for yourself, you look into working with a specialist.
