Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is a genetic disorder characterized by the growth of cysts in the kidneys. These cysts can enlarge the kidneys and impair their function over time, leading to symptoms such as high blood pressure, abdominal pain, and eventually kidney failure. The Walk for PKD events take place nationwide in September and October. The local North Texas Walk for PKD event will take place on Saturday, October 11 at 8:30 am in Southlake, TX.

Southlake Town Square Rustin & Family Park
1400 Main St.
Southlake, TX 76092

The event brings together patients, caregivers, physicians, and researchers to strengthen the PKD community and help fund life-saving research.

Today is APOL-1 Awareness Day

AMKD is a form of kidney disease associated with genetic changes or mutations in the APOL1 (apolipoprotein L1) gene. Normally, the APOL1 genes make a helpful immune system protein. Some people are born with mutations in one or both APOL1 genes. If you inherit mutations in both APOL1 genes, you have an increased risk for developing kidney disease. The only way to know if you have the APOL1 gene mutations is to do genetic testing. This testing would look for gene mutations with a sample of blood or saliva. To learn more, visit https://www.kidney.org/kidney-topics/apol1-mediated-kidney-disease-amkd.

Let's help spread the word about Fabry disease, a rare genetic condition that can impact both individuals and their families in significant ways. This condition can lead to complications that affect the kidneys, heart, and brain. One of the effects is the buildup of GL-3 in the kidneys, which can harm their ability to filter waste from the body over time. To learn more, check out https://www.fabrydisease.org
