Have you felt kindness today?

Sometimes it’s the little things. At the grocery store today someone held the door for me. In the checkout line another person invited me to go ahead of them with my two items. Kindness. ❤️

A smile, saying hello, sharing berries or flowers from the garden. Listening to a neighbor’s hard day. Being kind can be as small as this and it can mean so much.

Happy World Kindness Day!

Planting bulbs in the fall is a great way to let go of the garden that has fed my soul and to look ahead with joy.

I love the anticipation of bulbs blooming, both inside and outside.

Do you have favorite bulb flowers?

I needed some flowers today and thought you might, too. 💕

So interesting!

What an amazing discovery! Scientists have discovered that ants, after collecting the grains and seeds that they need for winter break those seeds down into halves before storing in their nests because breaking them in half keeps them from germinating even through rain and the most perfect germinating conditions. But scientists were stunned when they discovered that coriander seeds stored in the ant nest were broken down into 4 pieces instead of 2 pieces. After lab research, scientists discovered that a coriander seed will still germinate after being divided into two, but it won’t germinate after it’s divided into four parts. So how do these tiny tiny creatures know all this? Humans know very little, there's a lot to learn from other creatures. 🐜 See less

Leaves! 🍂 🍁🪾

Do you leave the leaves? 😉 I recently read an article in the about a 2 year study regarding the effects of letting leaves stay where they fall.

This study looked at insect life rather than soil, which is something I hadn’t considered before.

What did they learn?
• Almost 2000 insects emerged in the spring from one square meter where leaves were left in place
• These insects provide natural pest control and included butterflies, moths, beetles, spiders, flies and native bees
• Pollination was also given a boost from the insects

What’s the ideal leaf leaving? To leave them where they fall 🪾

🍁Shredding leaves is almost as harmful to insects as removing the leaves
🍂 Moving leaves to an unmanaged spot (under a tree, in a corner) is still helpful
🍁 Using whole leaves in a light layer for mulch is good, just not too thick to allow insects an accurate read in the weather
🍂 Allow the leaves to stay in place for long term habitat (I’ve found a queen bumblebee in my undisturbed leaves 🐝)

So, realistically most of us will move leaves. I do a combo of leaving them in place under a tree, putting some at the curb for pick up, and moving some to garden beds for plant protection and soil benefit.

I thought this study was interesting enough to share, and I think doing what works is different for each of us.

Happy leaf season 🧡

Thank you to for sharing her gorgeous leaf photos!! Can you tell she loves fall?
