Resident Spotlight...Betty B.
Betty moved to Liberty Estates in 2014. You will often see her visiting with other tenants and participating in activities.
She was born in Ridge Farm, Illinois (when babies were born at home.) She went to Ridge-Farm High School (class of 1946) and was 17 years old when she graduated high school and immediately entered Lakeview Hospital to become a Nurse (which only took her three years to obtain her RN License.)
Betty worked in the OB/Nursery Department for two years at Lakeview Hospital. She then received a scholarship to attend George Peabody College where she obtained a Public Health Degree. Betty then moved to Jacksonville, Illinois where she worked for three years at the Public Health Department.
After that she obtained another degree from the University of Illinois in Health Education. She then became a school nurse for District 118 and later worked for the VA for 20 years.
Betty was married to Roy Barkman, Jr. for 51 years. Her husband and his family were all part of Barkman Chevrolet, a well-known Car Dealership in Danville.
Betty enjoyed baking and cooking and earned awards for her cooking.
When asked what advice she would give to someone who wanted to move to Liberty Estates, Betty said, ‘for me it was the best place to move. I have a lot of friends, and I enjoy the atmosphere."
Betty is (almost) 97 years old but you sure cannot tell it by looking at her. She stays active by walking the halls at Liberty Estates and using an elliptical machine in her apartment and enjoys visiting with other estates tenants.
Thanks for sharing a little bit of your life with us, Betty! We love having you as part of our Liberty Village of Danville family!
