New research reveals that a specific brain circuit connecting the nucleus accumbens, hypothalamus, and lateral habenula can push behavior into a compulsive “repeat mode.”

When activated, this circuit induces a negative emotional state that makes mice persist in repetitive actions even when rewards are available.

Shutting down the downstream portion of the pathway immediately stops the compulsive behavior, demonstrating its causal role.

These findings provide a mechanistic explanation for how repetitive behaviors emerge and may offer clues for conditions such as OCD and addiction.
