Always a pleasure teaching and raising awareness for podiatric medicine. Today the Podiatric Education Society at California School of Podiatric Medicine conducted two suturing workshops for high school students at the UC Davis. It was a privilege to have Dr. Monson and Dr. Cho speak to the students about why they chose podiatric medicine, as well as share their stories from the time they were in medical school.

Yesterday was a great day to fight for my profession at the state level. My fellow student colleagues and I were paired with podiatrists to advocate for AB 407 ( Fluoroscopy) and AB 678 (Reinstatement of Podiatric Services in Medi-Cal). My group was paired with Dr. Jagur and Dr. Le, they both shakers great insight and helped us understand more about the California laws regarding podiatric medicine. Lobbying and fighting for my profession is a way for me to pay it forward.

Today we marked the first day of our Biomechanics Rotation. During this rotation we learn about orthotic fabrication, casting, taping, gait analysis, etc. by Dr. Dutra. Depicted in these pictures we were practicing different types of taping techniques such as low dye, as well as getting comfortable with different foot types (cavus, planus, or re**us). Biomechanics is a huge part of podiatric medicine and knowing the anatomy, physics, and movement of joints and ligaments help in assessing and treating patients.

Teaching is the best way to learn. Yesterday we had the opportunity to teach the first year students on how to do a hallux block injection. Learning is one thing but being able to pass on the knowledge in a non confusing manner is truly showing you know the subject area with confidence.

It wasn’t long ago when I started prepping for the MCAT. This a crucial test for admission into allopathic, osteopathic, and podiatric medical schools. Give yourself enough time to study and be realistic on how much you can study per day and what goal you set for yourself on the test. If you have any questions/concerns regarding MCAT prep drop us a message and we will try to help you to the best of our abilities.

Learning on how to do hand ties is skill that is very useful in a surgical setting. Today we had a few students practice and teach each other the steps involved while waiting for patients to line up at the free clinic we were volunteering at. We also had a wonderful opportunity to teach a few pre-med students from UC Davis on how to suture as well as hand-ties. Free clinics are very beneficial to the community, underserved patients, and medical students. It gives us a chance to give back to the community while also practicing our knowledge. For the patient it helps them return or gradually improve towards a better quality of life and health.

The thing about med school friendships is that they are lifelong. Today we have two first year podiatric medical students enjoying each other’s company and cherishing the moments of being housemates, friends, and starting Monday a new chapter in their lives will unfold. The life of Podiatric medical student isn’t only in the hallways of a hospital, a classroom, library, etc it is also in the world beyond academics. Moments like these will remind us 10 years from now that together my friend and I made it through medical school.

Done with the second round of clinical rotation for second year. This past month we spent every Monday and Friday at the simulation center learning on how to work up a patient. Some of the challenges we encountered were, how to ask a specific question, empathy cues, learning proper patient-physician etiquette, etc. Simulation centers are a great way to knock out some mistakes, habits, and improve on our knowledge and also how to use what we know. Thank you Dr. Stamps and Dr. Nair who is not pictured for educating us and taking your time to answer the questions we had.
