Looking for a quick, inexpensive activity that also supports development? I found everything needed for this Easter sensory bin for only about $6 at Dollar General!

What you need:
• Plastic bin
• Easter grass
• Foam colored Easter eggs

Simply fill the bin with Easter grass and hide the eggs inside for a fun sensory hunt!

Skills this activity targets:
✨ Tactile processing – digging through the grass provides a rich sensory experience for little hands.
✨ Visual discrimination – children search through the grass to find the hidden eggs.
✨ Color matching – have your child match the eggs to a colored egg carton to build early cognitive and sorting skills.
✨ Higher-level thinking – you can add counting, sorting, or patterning as your child grows.

Simple activities like this are fun, affordable, and packed with developmental benefits.

🌷 Sensory play + learning + Easter fun = a win for everyone!

March is dedicated to raising awareness for Cerebral palsy — the most common motor disability in childhood.

Cerebral palsy (CP) is a neurological condition caused by differences in early brain development that impact movement, muscle tone, posture, and coordination. CP looks different for every child. Some children may have mild motor challenges, while others may need more significant physical support.

But here’s what’s most important:
💚 Children with CP are strong.
💚 They are capable.
💚 They are full of potential.

Early intervention and therapy services — including occupational therapy, physical therapy, and speech therapy — can help children build strength, coordination, communication skills, independence, and confidence.

This month, we celebrate:
✨ Milestones big and small
✨ Adaptive equipment that creates access
✨ Families who advocate fiercely
✨ Therapists who believe in every child’s potential

Let’s continue building inclusive communities where all children can thrive.

💚

And we are endlessly thankful for each and every one of you.

In a world full of Stanley cups, Yeti cups, and every straw cup imaginable… let’s not forget the power of the OPEN CUP.

Open cup drinking is more than just a milestone — it’s a foundational oral-motor and sensory skill that supports long-term feeding, speech, and regulation.

When a child drinks from an open cup, they are working on:

• Lip closure and strength
• Jaw stability
• Tongue retraction and control
• Grading how much liquid enters the mouth
• Coordinating breathing and swallowing
• Postural control and neck extension
• Vestibular processing and head positioning

Unlike straw cups (which can sometimes allow children to “dump and swallow”), an open cup requires true motor planning and control. The child must tip the cup just enough, stabilize their jaw, manage the flow, and swallow safely.

For children with vestibular insecurities, tipping the head back can feel unsafe or dysregulating. For children with decreased neck strength or postural control, maintaining upright alignment while extending the neck can be challenging. For sensory-sensitive children, the unpredictability of liquid flow can increase anxiety.

But with the right supports, this skill can absolutely be built.

Strategies that help:

• Start with very small amounts of liquid (just a sip!)
• Use small, lightweight cups
• Practice in supported sitting with feet flat and trunk stable
• Provide deep pressure or heavy work before drinking for regulation
• Offer chin support or jaw stabilization as needed
• Try thicker liquids initially to slow the flow
• Model slow, controlled tipping
• Use a mirror for visual feedback

Open cup drinking supports mature swallowing patterns and helps children learn to grade and control what comes out of the cup — an essential skill for safe feeding.

It’s okay to love your Stanley.
It’s also okay to make room for skill-building.

If you have questions about your child’s oral motor development or feeding skills, our team is here to help.

Is your child more dysregulated lately?
You’re not imagining it.

When routines shift, siblings are home sick, sleep is off, and germs are everywhere… regulation takes a hit.

What looks like defiance is often a nervous system that feels overloaded.

Try these 3 quick resets tonight:

• Wall pushes or heavy work for 2 minutes
• Blanket burrito squeezes
• Animal walks down the hallway

These simple activities help organize the nervous system and support emotional regulation.

If your child is struggling with regulation, motor planning, feeding, or communication, we’re here to help.

Sometimes it’s not behavior.
Sometimes it’s the nervous system.

The founding of Enabled Living

Our team of dedicated and passionate professionals began in 2016 with an idea of providing individualized services to clients of ALL ages that differed from what has been termed “therapy”.

As occupation-based specialists, we value the emphasis on client’s interests and goals during therapeutic intervention; however, feel the traditional medical model of providing services often limits practitioners abilities to do so.

As we began to explore this gap in occupational therapy services, we quickly recognized the need for caregiver support and alternative ways to foster independence in the home and community. Our team concluded that how we provide services must better meet the needs of our diverse and often more vulnerable clientele no matter the age or level of independence. With this perspective in mind, Enabled Living was founded.

Enabled Living is committed to offering more opportunities to our clientele in order to maximize independence by addressing barriers throughout the lifespan and across all environments. We desire above all else to remove challenged health status, economic status, as well as community/home environmental barriers as being obstacles to successful living.
