It’s Black History Month!

This month is a great opportunity to celebrate, learn, and have meaningful conversations with our kids about Black leaders, culture, and history—past and present.

👧🏽👦🏾 Easy ways to explore Black History with children:

📚 Read books by Black authors or about Black heroes
🎨 Create art inspired by Black artists and inventors
🎶 Listen to music from different Black musicians and eras
🗺️ Learn about influential Black leaders who helped shape our world
🗣️ Talk about kindness, fairness, and standing up for others

Black history is American history—and learning together helps raise curious, compassionate, and inclusive kids 💙

Drop your favorite books, activities, or conversations below

We’d love to learn together!

💘 Spreading the Love with The Cupid Project! 💘

This past week, our clinic has been so excited to participate in The Cupid Project, and we’ve had an absolute blast! Our kids have had so much fun while working on empathy and understanding emotions—learning how to think of others and build social skills in a meaningful way.

Through activities like finger painting, we’ve been targeting important goals all at once:
🎨 Fine motor & visual motor skills
🤲 Sensory exploration & tactile defensiveness
💖 Empathy, kindness, and social connection

It’s been incredible to watch our kids create heartfelt cards that will be shared with seniors in our local senior living centers—art with purpose and love behind it!

If any of our clients’ siblings would like to participate, we would love that! Please have them bring a handmade card into the clinic, and we’ll make sure it gets delivered and spreads even more joy 💌

Thank you for helping us make this week full of creativity, compassion, and connection. We’re already counting this as a favorite project! 🥰✨

🚨 ALERT – GEORGIA MEDICAID UPDATE 🚨

Parents, we have been informed of a major statewide error affecting Georgia Medicaid. As of 2/1, hundreds of children across the state have unexpectedly been marked as having inactive Medicaid benefits.

Please know that our office is actively working on this. We are currently:
✔️ Checking every child’s benefits
✔️ Contacting families directly if we see an issue

If you would like to get ahead of this, you may:
📞 Call 866-211-0950 and follow the prompts to check your child’s Medicaid eligibility.

If your child has been impacted, please:
1️⃣ Call our office to notify us
2️⃣ 📞 Call 877-423-4746 and leave a message with the Katie Beckett Department

We understand how stressful and frustrating this is, and we are truly sorry this is happening. Please know that many agencies are working together toward a resolution, and we will continue to update families as we learn more.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Meet: Ms. Pam
Name: Pamela Schmitt

How long I’ve been at Prosper: 2 years

A Little About Me

Why I became a therapist: As a child, my favorite job was babysitting—I loved working with kids and finding creative ways to engage them. I also spent a lot of time at my mom’s school, volunteering and observing speech therapists at work. I was hooked instantly—helping kids find their voices? Count me in!

My favorite part of my job: The best part of my day? Smiles, giggles, and learning alongside the kids. Seeing their faces light up when they succeed and celebrating those victories with them and their families is pure magic—and those moments of joy are why I love this job!
What inspires me about my clients: What inspires me most about my clients is their incredible determination. Their work is fun, but it’s also hard—they pour themselves into every new word, every bite of a new food, and every attempt on their speech devices. Sometimes reaching those milestones feels like running a marathon, and I am in awe of their perseverance. I often find that I learn just as much from them about resilience and determination as they do from me.

Therapist Favorites

Favorite therapy activity: I love creating new materials and switching things up to keep therapy fun. I especially enjoy literature-based activities and adapted books, where we can ‘play’ the stories with objects and manipulatives to extend the themes and bring the stories to life.

Favorite toy or tool in the clinic: My oversized stuffed unicorn started as a surprise reward and quickly became my speech room mascot and theme. Kids love hugging it, talking to it, and its personality has come to life! It also doubles as a sensory support, chair, or pretend play prop—bringing joy and creativity to every session.

Favorite sensory activity: My top sensory activities? Sensory exploration bins and fun animal-shaped oral motor tools. I use them in nearly every session—they’re hands-on, motivating, and just plain fun.

Favorite movie or TV show: It’s so hard to pick just one! At the top of my list: the Harry Potter movies, Twilight, Pride and Prejudice, or pretty much any new Netflix documentary. Right now, I’m in the midst of a Gilmore Girls marathon with my daughter!

Favorite holiday: Christmas
If I wasn’t a therapist, I’d be a meditation teacher or spiritual guide—helping others find calm, clarity, and connection, one breath at a time.

Happy National Opposite Day

It’s cold outside… so let’s move BACKWARDS inside!

Opposite Day is a perfect time to work on motor planning, body awareness, and flexible thinking, all while being silly.

Try these “Opposite Day” activities:

Obstacle Course… BACKWARDS
• Crawl through a tunnel backwards
• Step over pillows in reverse
• Walk heel-to-toe going backward
• Push a laundry basket back to start

Flexible Thinking Fun
• Do steps in the wrong order (finish → start)
• Pretend snow is hot lava
• Say the opposite action first (“jump” = squat)
• Change the rules halfway through the game

Motor Planning Boosters
• Mirror a partner’s movements backwards
• Copy a movement after watching it once
• Freeze → move → freeze again

Opposite Day reminds kids that it’s okay when plans change — and learning to adapt is a BIG skill

So today… don’t go forward.
Go BACKWARDS

How fun!

How fun!

When the temperature drops below freezing, it’s the perfect time to try frozen bubbles ❄️🫧
All you need to do is mix the ingredients in a small bowl, dip a straw into the solution, and gently blow a bubble outside onto a cold surface – snow works perfectly.
The secret is to make smaller bubbles and not let them fall from high up. Instead, gently blow the bubble right onto the surface, almost touching it.
For us, it worked around the third try, so don’t give up!
Within about 20 seconds, the bubble started to freeze and beautiful frost patterns appeared. Watching it slowly freeze is pure magic ✨
Such a fun winter activity to try on a cold day!

❄️ Ice Storm Survival: Keeping Kids Busy Indoors ❄️

Stuck inside with icy roads? We’ve got you covered—whether the power stays on or goes out!

✨ If the power is ON:
• Build a blanket fort + flashlight “reading cave”
• Obstacle course with couch cushions, pillows, and painter’s tape on the floor
• Dance party or freeze dance (bonus energy burn!)
• Board games, puzzles, or a family movie with popcorn
• Crafts: coloring, Play-Doh, stickers, or DIY slime

🕯️ If the power goes OUT:
• Flashlight scavenger hunt around the house
• Tell stories by lantern or candlelight (grown-up supervised!)
• Card games, charades, or “I Spy”
• Build a fort and pretend you’re camping indoors
• Sing songs, read books, or do calming stretches/yoga

No matter what—keep it simple, stay warm, and remember: kids don’t need perfect days… just safe ones and a little fun.

Stay cozy and stay safe! ❄️🧤

The founding of Enabled Living

Our team of dedicated and passionate professionals began in 2016 with an idea of providing individualized services to clients of ALL ages that differed from what has been termed “therapy”.

As occupation-based specialists, we value the emphasis on client’s interests and goals during therapeutic intervention; however, feel the traditional medical model of providing services often limits practitioners abilities to do so.

As we began to explore this gap in occupational therapy services, we quickly recognized the need for caregiver support and alternative ways to foster independence in the home and community. Our team concluded that how we provide services must better meet the needs of our diverse and often more vulnerable clientele no matter the age or level of independence. With this perspective in mind, Enabled Living was founded.

Enabled Living is committed to offering more opportunities to our clientele in order to maximize independence by addressing barriers throughout the lifespan and across all environments. We desire above all else to remove challenged health status, economic status, as well as community/home environmental barriers as being obstacles to successful living.
