Deep Tissue Massage is simply work that accesses the deeper layers of muscle tissue. Though it is often thought of as grit your teeth and bear it, forcing pressure when the body does not accept it causes more stress on both the client and the therapist, and can have a detrimental impact on the tissue being addressed.
In my sessions, I work to activate the parasympathetic nervous system (aka "rest and digest") so that the superficial muscles gladly give way for work into the deeper layers where chronic pain resides. Though this deeper work can be a little intense at times, with conscious breathing and good communication you should not feel much more than the "good hurt" where productivity far outweighs any discomfort you may feel.
