Filling out the top of the W-4 is the easy part. Where most people get tripped up is the filing status.

👉 Head of Household does not apply just because you pay all your own bills or live alone. If you don’t have children or dependents in your home or that you provide more than 50% of the support for (example: elderly parents you support living in their own home & you pay their bills), you should be checking Single.
If you’re on low-income rent or Section 8, you should also be filing Single — not HOH. The government pays majority of your household upkeep and you will have trouble proving your contribution so just file single and avoid the mess.

🔹 Step 2 – Check the box if one of those situations fits you.
🔹 Step 3 – If your dependents are under 17, put them in the first box and multiply. 17 and older go in the “other dependents” box. Add both up and put the total on the line. If they turned 17 during this year, you need to adjust this.
🔹 Step 4a – Add other income that doesn’t automatically withhold taxes (examples: retirement, Social Security, disability, self-employment 1099, gambling winnings, capital gains).
🔹 Step 4b – Leave it blank.
🔹 Step 4c – If you want extra withholdings taken out, this is where you enter it. Especially important if you’ve ever claimed exempt before — this helps you “catch up” and avoid a tax headache later.

✍️ Sign it, turn it in, and you’re good to go.

You still have time to withdraw those fraudulent ERC claims submitted for 2022 until November 22nd. If you know you did not have employees and were not eligible and you submitted this or someone submitted it for you, I strongly suggest withdrawing to avoid those hefty penalties the IRS will sock you with. They will easily stick you with a 5k penalty for trying to defraud them. Just take it back while they are giving you a chance.

Attention: If you live in Michigan and live in the listed counties or have a business in them, you have been given an extension to file & pay what you owe on your 2024 individual tax returns due to the disaster of severe flooding and heavy rains last August! You must indicate on your return you were a disaster victim. I’m still filing returns year round. Do not panic!
