Screening and early detection are key to fighting cancer. About 90% of patients who go on to be diagnosed with endometrial cancer have postmenopausal bleeding—but transvaginal ultrasonography, the method used to examine postmenopausal bleeding, doesn’t always catch cancer at first examination.

To help improve ob-gyns’ ability to detect and diagnose endometrial cancer, ACOG now recommends that endometrial tissue sampling be used alongside transvaginal ultrasonography at first examination to give clinicians a more reliable path to detecting and treating uterine cancers.

This dual approach reduces the risk of a missed diagnosis while also streamlining the process for patients, who can have sampling done in the same visit as their ultrasound. If you’ve experienced postmenopausal bleeding, speak with your ob-gyn to learn more.
