❤️February is American Heart Month
What’s good for the heart is good for the brain!

Heart Disease and Alzheimer's Disease, like many chronic diseases, share similar risk factors. Brain health messaging, when integrated into other chronic disease prevention efforts, has been shown to increase lifestyle change and risk reduction.

Consider integrating brain health messaging to amplify your health impact. Check out NACDD’s Risk Reduction Rack Cards and Infographics to support your initiatives:

This Black History Month, NACDD honors leaders whose brilliance and advocacy continue to shape public health and chronic disease prevention.

Dr. Daniel Hale Williams performed one of the earliest successful open-heart surgeries and founded one of the first Black-owned hospitals in the U.S., expanding access to lifesaving care. Dr. Marilyn Hughes Gaston’s research advanced newborn screening and early treatment for sickle cell disease, transforming national public health policy.

We also recognize Henrietta Lacks, whose HeLa cells revolutionized medical research and sparked critical conversations about ethics and transparency in healthcare.

Their legacies continue to inspire progress toward a future where everyone has the opportunity to achieve their fullest health potential.

World Cancer Day is February 4. This is a day to raise awareness about cancer, focus on preventing it, and take action to address the global cancer epidemic.

NACDD’s Disability Network for To***co Control and Cancer Prevention encourages public health professionals to ensure their cancer prevention programs intentionally include people with disabilities. Here are a few tips on how to get started:

1️⃣ Cancer Prevention Screenings and Programs - Offer accessible cancer prevention screenings that allow people with disabilities to be tested for cancer. Provide inclusive wellness programs that give information about ways to stop to***co use and prevent cancer. Some ways to make sure your programs are accessible include:

👉Partner with disability service organizations and/or people with disabilities, health care providers, and program staff who are disabled and/or understand disability
👉Offer virtual appointment options
👉Identify and assist with accessible transportation to appointments
👉Have a procedure in place for providing sign language interpreters, resources in braille, easy-read, and plain language styles

2️⃣ Inclusive Cancer Prevention Working Groups - Make sure your cancer plan working groups are led by and include people with different types of disabilities. This will ensure programs are accessible and people with disabilities are intentionally included.

3️⃣ Cancer Education and Awareness Campaigns - Create cancer prevention campaigns that are accessible and represent people with disabilities.
