**What is Mistletoe?**
Mistletoe is a parasitic evergreen plant that lives on trees, burrowing into their branches to steal water and vital nutrients, acting like a "tree thief" (Phoradendron means "tree thief" in Greek). It weakens the host tree by depriving it of resources, causing stunted growth, dead branches, and increased susceptibility to pests or disease, and in severe cases, can lead to the tree's death, especially if the tree is already stressed.
Hemiparasite: Mistletoe has green leaves and performs some photosynthesis to make its own food, but it relies on the host tree for water and minerals.
Invasive Growth: It germinates from seeds (often spread by birds) that stick to branches, sending roots into the tree's vascular system (xylem) to steal resources.
Why It Kills Trees (or Harms Them)
Nutrient Deprivation: It siphons off water and essential nutrients, weakening the tree over time.
Physical Stress: Heavy infestations can cause branches to break, especially under ice or wind.
Weakened Defenses: A mistletoe-infested tree is more vulnerable to other problems like drought, disease, or insect attacks (e.g., bark beetles).
Stunted Growth & Mortality: It leads to reduced vigor, slower growth, and eventually can kill the tree, particularly young or stressed trees.
**How to Manage It**
Pruning: The most effective method is to prune the infected branch at least 1 to 2 feet below the point where the mistletoe attaches.
Professional Help: For severe cases, hire us for proper removal to prevent the tree from dying from excessive branch loss.
