San Antonio was amazing!! I’ve been before for Skillathon but this was my first time showing stock there. Gemelli has been a stubborn girl since I picked her out and this show was no different, but her build and body got us through the sift and penned for Top 5! We came in 4th class behind both the Breed and Reserve Breed gilts so I can’t complain. The judge liked her look and top line, she’s just a little off in her back legs. I couldn’t be prouder of my first pig show though to place at such a high level show! Thank you to The Bottleberghe Family for trusting me with her!

I went back a few days later for Beef Skillathon against some of the toughest people I’ve gone against. I was lucky enough to make finals and ended up 8th in the Senior Division!

San Antonio was very good to us this year. Next up is Houston!

San Antonio bound!! First time showing in SA and first gilt show! This should be good! 🐽🤠

What a month… Fort Worth came with some ups and downs and a little chaos in between. We started with the Boer Goat show, competed in Goat Judging for the first time, missed the Junior Heifer show due to Winter Storm Fern, and closed out with a National Hereford Show. I also took some time to work the FFA Children’s Barnyard as part of my district officer duties. We lost a newer show heifer at New Years so we brought back in last year’s girl to finish out her majors show career. The goat herd is VERY young and still on the small side which showed against some good competition. We definitely have some work to do with our herds and we know what needs to reset for next year but trying to soak up all of the ringtime and experience we can. Next up, San Antonio and Houston!

Gabe also made the pull in Intermediate Showmanship and was specifically called out for how he shows. He just missed out on Top 2 but he was definitely a presence in the ring!

State Fair was my first major show and one I’ve always liked going to every year (especially for the food). This year, I came back to showing breeding does along with my heifer shows and contests. My goats did well but are still small in their classso hopefully Fort Worth is better. At the cattle show, Aila did well in a huge class, coming in right in the middle behind strong competition. My contests went well, with a 13th place in Vet Science (my score increased almost 100 points from last year!) and 7th in Beef Skillathon (15 points between 4th and 7th though!). I’m really proud of how I did and am looking forward to Fort Worth and my spring contests!

It’s National 4-H week and I’m proud to be a 4-Her! I started in 4-H a couple of years ago in the VSCP program and am continuing as an officer in Wylie 4-H while working on livestock projects, photography, leadership, and vet science. Quick update before I start my fair month. For the last year, I have been working on my FFA Goat Proficiency award by breeding my fullblood doe Funny Bone. I’ve got 2 does already from an embryo flush out of her but last week she kidded twin does from her last live cover breeding. What an experience this has been! I haven’t been there for any of the kiddings of my goats but I was there this time and able to help. The first girl was stuck and the second was breech, so I’m grateful for my mom and the McEntee family for helping get them both out and help make sure they were ok. The doe that was stuck needed to be tube fed for a couple days and then needed another day to get her legs moving right. She’s now my first bottle baby since her mom ended up rejecting her. I’m glad they are both alive and looking good and happy to have had this experience for my vet career.

It’s been awhile since we’ve posted but it’s been a busy month! We have new additions!

First is something new- I will be trying a show gilt this year! Meet Gemelli!! I’ve never had swine before so this is a good learning experience for my career path. And of course because I love the red and white, she’s a Hereford! She’s very friendly and sweet and I’m looking forward to learning how to feed and care for swine! Thank you to Bottelberghe Farms for the opportunity to raise her!

Then, we had a new heifer calf born in the field! Her mama is one of our originals and her sire is a force in the industry so we are excited to see how she grows out! We haven’t named her yet but she will be an exciting prospect for my show string! KLD RW Marksman D87 x MPH Alices 147

The past few days, I had the opportunity to attend the NJHA Faces of Leadership conference in St Louis, Missouri. This annual leadership event is just one more thing that makes our Hereford breed associations so incredible. Some of our activities this year included catching a St Louis Cardinals game, touring the Purina Animal Nutrition Center, learning what it takes to plan and put on big events like these for our members, listening to keynote speakers talk about how to grow as leaders, and networking with other junior members, adults, and industry partners. It was a lot of fun and eye-opening as I continue to look towards my future in the ag industry and my breed association.

Thank you to National Junior Hereford Association, Hereford Youth Foundation of America, Purina, Rick Malir, Chris Chinn, and Mike Matheny for your time and devotion to our success!
