Disability Pride Month is celebrated annually each year in July. It began as a day of celebration when the ADA was signed into law on July 26, 1990. Ann Magill, a writer with cerebral palsy, was motivated to create a flag following an ADA anniversary event. The first flag was modified to the version we have now, which is an accomodation to red-green colorblindness! The diagonal band of six color stripes cut across the barriers separating the disabled from society, representing light and creativity cutting through darkness. Each of the six color stripes hold meaning:
Red: physical disabilities
Gold: neurodiversity
White: invisible disabilities and undiagnosed conditions
Blue: emotional and psychiatric disabilities
Green: sensory disabilities, blindness, deafness
Faded Black Background: mourning and rage for victims of ableist violence and abuse.
