"Joy. A three-letter word that is so simple and short, and yet, experiencing joy often feels complicated.

Through my study and work in Karuna Training, I’ve seen joy as a spectrum, from contentment to ecstasy. There’s a wide range in there - celebration, happiness, satisfaction, playfulness, delight, wonder, and more. And, as Ross Gay says in the quote above, joy is not separate from sorrow."
- Miriam Hall

Join Karuna Faculty member, Miriam Hall on Saturday, August 26th at 10AM MT as she explores the complexities of harvesting joy. For more information and to register, visit: https://karunatraining.com/event/harvesting-joy/

Today, I want to address a thought that often impacts those of us living with chronic illness: feeling like a burden. This feeling is deeply painful and isolating, but I'm here to tell you - You are NOT a burden.

Living with a chronic illness can mean needing extra support, care, or accommodations. It may mean days when you can't participate in activities as you'd like, or when you need to ask for help. But this doesn't make you a burden. It makes you human.

Every one of us has unique needs, and yours are just as valid as anyone else's. Requiring support doesn't diminish your worth or value—in fact, it emphasizes the strength in your vulnerability and the courage in your journey.

Remember, your worth isn't determined by how much you do, how productive you are, or how independent you can be. Your worth is inherent. It's in your kindness, your heart, your uniqueness.

Let's dismantle the harmful narrative that equates needing help with being a burden. Let's celebrate the strength in asking for support, and let's remind each other that we are all interconnected, all needing and giving support!

If you're living with a chronic illness, know this: You are valued. You are worthy. And you are NOT a burden.

What if wellness meant learning to co-exist with joy and pain?

In human life, it's inevitable. We are going to experience wild joy and devastating loss. We are going to experience both the light and the dark. Perhaps the best thing we can do is learn to co-exist with these truths.

Suleika Jaouad speaks to this beautifully in her book Between Two Kingdoms, a memoir of her journey with cancer. She states, "what if I stopped thinking of pain as something that needs to be numbed, fixed, dodged, and protected against? What if I tried to honor its presence in my body, to welcome it into the present?" She shares that "healing is figuring out how to co-exist with the pain that will always live inside you."

These words feel relevant to both physical and mental health. To acknowledge that pain or illness cannot necessarily be cured but that you can still live a beautiful life alongside it. Wellness might feel unattainable from the way our culture traditionally defines it, but maybe what wellness actually means is learning to co-exist with both the joy and the pain in our lives.
