27 participants and facilitators took a walk this weekend.

We stood united in faith and love as the dragons began revealing themselves along the path (…and boy were there some big and scary ones this time around!), and instead of running away or drawing our spears for a fight, we learned how to simply and gently - dance with them.

This was a big weekend for all of us, and I couldn’t be more proud of how this group showed up for themselves, and each other, in such big ways.

Our Hero’s have now all returned home… with their treasure.

Hey friends and colleagues!

I'm thrilled to invite you all to my upcoming lecture titled "Healing the Hidden Wounds: Veteran Moral Injury, Addiction, and the Promise of Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy." This session is scheduled for Friday, June 28, from 12pm-1pm MST, and it's completely FREE!

During the lecture, I'll share some of the information I’ve learned through my own research and the insights I’ve gained from my experiences working as a private practice therapist supporting veterans, first responders, healthcare personnel, and survivors of childhood abuse struggling with Moral Injury and Addiction—many of whom have followed a calling into Psychedelics to help heal their wounds. I will also share some of what Tegan and I have been seeing at the Wounded Healer Project, our 501c3 that provides pro bono mental health services for justice-involved veterans navigating Drug and Alcohol treatment courts in the Denver Metro area, where we’ve witnessed firsthand the profound impact that Moral Injury can have on Veterans' lives, identities, relationships, and their ability to find meaning and purpose.

My goal with this lecture is to highlight what I believe are often misunderstood areas of veteran mental health (i.e., Moral Injury vs. PTSD, the relationship between Moral Injury and Addiction) and how psychedelics can offer a novel and deeply healing catalyst for Veterans who are struggling with these and may be seeking recovery, growth and transformation.

Of note, for any psychologists out there, this program includes 1.0 CE credit. If you're interested, just register through the link to receive the Zoom details.

Please feel free to reach out with any questions. I'm looking forward to sharing this space with you all!

**Attention Veterans**

Please join my Ranger Buddy and fellow therapist, Karl Monger, and me for our 3rd annual Spirit of Darby Event!

Spirit of Darby events bring together Rangers, other veterans, and veteran supporters in challenging outdoor activities focused on improving emotional, physical, spiritual, professional, and social fitness with a focus on improved mental health. Participants are encouraged to become GallantFew VetSTARs: fluent in mental health and committed to removing the stigma of mental healthcare.

This year's event includes hiking at Palo Duro State Park, the Incline at Manitou Springs, camping and hiking in Cheyenne Mountain State Park, outdoor climbing in Colorado Springs, a hike to the summit of Pikes Peak, and an American Indian Sweat Lodge Ceremony in Denver.

For event details and to sign up, please follow the registration link below!

General Creighton Abram's Charter in 1974 charged Rangers to lead the way in rebuilding the Army post-Vietnam. We had another great Sweat Lodge Ceremony today! Lost quite a few folks over the previous two weeks due to some unforeseen events but those who showed up were in for a good one. We had mix of Veterans and Therapists once again and it was a POWERFUL experience for everyone. You know it was a HOT one when most of our participants didn’t have the energy left to take the post-ceremony portraits. Lol.

Special thanks, as always, to Carlos and G for holding such a big and healing space. The wisdom they share and the sense of safety they create were invaluable. Today’s ceremony was a beautiful gift, and I couldn’t be more appreciative of these opportunities to continue learning and growing. 🙏🏻

This past weekend was a BIG Sweat Lodge experience. We had over 20 participants including several Veterans join us for this one. A special thanks to Doug McGhee, founder of the The Realm.Men Initiative, for his leadership and willingness to bring a group of courageous and curious individuals from his coaching community into what was one of the most challenging ceremonies I’ve ever been part of. It’s been a true honor for me to help facilitate these experiences for others with the guidance and support of our incredible guides and healers from the Native American community.

Usually, I try to describe a little of what these experiences are like for me and what I learn from them but this time I felt called to share a bit of the survey feedback I’ve received from the other participants regarding their own experiences during the ceremony. If you would like to participate in future sweat lodge ceremonies please feel free to reach out to me at tim.spalla@agilewg.org.

Describe any physical or emotional responses you experienced during the ceremony.

“Sight deprivation, sound stimulation, heat/humidity challenges. Felt supported, loved, safe, in community, honored to be included, uncertain at times re: could I make it through, comforted by prayer, relief in shedding of fear, doubts, judgment, relief when the flap opened. Exhaustion, relief, pride when we finished. Cleansed physically, Emotionally, mentally & spiritually. Later felt an alignment of all 4”

“All of it; and seriously difficult as well as impactful, and the only way to get there is at these limits.”

“As pre-warned, I thought my ears would melt off and the rest of my body wanted to exit towards cold air.”

“Anticipation, anxiety, fear, irritation, doubt, self judgement, ego, performance focused, all gave way to complete surrender, acceptance, peace despite the intensity of the ceremony.”

“I loved pushing through something hard and driving myself to make sure I completed the experience.”

“It was very complex and difficult to summarize. Physical suffering that evolved into trance-like state with dysphoria and temporary loss of functionality. The emotional response was intense, as though my ego was in battle with my soul's purpose.”

Did you face any challenges during the Sweat Lodge ceremony (e.g., physical discomfort, emotional difficulty)?

“Yes. I got what I needed.”

“Yes. Body felt like I was going to burn up, it was a mental challenge to push through. Tim's teachings prepared me to mentally "refocus" my mind from the heat and suffering.”

Yes. Emotionally, Rage, sadness… the heat from each round and the steam intensified the physical experience, round 3 I believe was elevated by the Eucalyptus or Sage… that was a mo********er brief moment of nausea. but it quickly passed.”

How do you feel the ceremony impacted you spiritually or culturally?

“Culturally, I felt an intense connection with the idea of privilege and suffering, that my suffering in 15-minute increments was something that lives in others persistently and internally in others.”

“It was powerful in the sense of pushing you to a limit in an unconventional way. The power of prayer, endurance, music and sensory deprivation is unique. I loved the message of praying for others through your physical challenges.”

What benefits, if any, do you feel you gained from participating in the ceremony

“I experienced incredibly intense feelings of community and wisdom.”

“I was able to clearly see some of my history including my childhood and war trauma in a very clear and different
perspective that brought me peace and understanding such that I was able to make a mental, emotional, and spiritual shift in how I see myself.”

What is your overall impression of the Sweat Lodge ceremony?
“Intense. Impossible to comprehend unless you've done it. It was extremely valuable, healing, and profound.”

“Emotional release, cultural connection, focus, group prayer, community building, compassion, physical and endurance testing.”
“I can see why this practice has been used for thousands of years in many forms.”

“Excellent! I’ve never felt such cleansing and alignment”

I'm thrilled to announce that I'll be joining forces once again with my Ranger Buddy, fellow Therapist, and Executive Director & Founder of the Gallant Few, Monger, to present an important topic at this year's ACA Conference & Expo 2024: "Moral Injury and the Military Veteran."

Together, we will explore the intricate challenges faced by many veterans living with moral injury— a wound not visible on the outside but deeply felt within. The session is designed to be immersive and insightful, filled with valuable knowledge, practical approaches, and authentic narratives of moral injury, healing journeys, and personal growth.

Our goal is to equip therapists with the awareness and tools needed to effectively connect with and support their veteran clients to heal these hidden wounds.

This was a SPECIAL Inipi ceremony!

We had 15 Veterans show up, and several more participants, including therapists and natural medicine healers, join us for the experience. It’s been quite the honor for me to witness our groups getting bigger and bigger each month and with so many new faces each time.

I’m convinced of the healing potential of this timeless ritual and couldn’t be more excited to continue the work of helping others find their way to it. Words cannot express my sincere gratitude for our group of Native Facilitators who graciously invite us in to these sacred experiences and hold such big healing space for us all.

“Believe in your prayers enough to walk toward them every day of your life.”

Another Sweat Lodge Ceremony complete!

Yesterday marked a milestone for us with the largest group ever, totaling 17 participants, gathering for the sacred Inipi ceremony. As always, I’m proud of the Veterans, therapists, healers and friends who continue to show up in big ways for these challenging experiences and I hold a deep gratitude for the time, patience and education provided by our incredible group of Native healers and singers who always hold such beautiful space for us.

This ceremony was particularly special for me. As I looked out over the group we brought in I could see long-lost buddies from my undergrad days playing Rugby at the University of Northern Iowa and felt grateful for the opportunity to reconnect with them in such a special way. Some new friends and business associates came out for this one as well and to be allowed the opportunity to sit with them in such a difficult space and share in their processes was truly incredible and so deeply connective. I was also blessed with the presence of my medicine family members Tegan and Seth, both of whom continue to serve as critical lifelines for me during what has been some of the most difficult months and experiences of my life. And as always, I was humbled to bear witness to the Veterans in our group as they did the difficult work of confronting and pushing through some of the mental, emotional and spiritual obstacles they’ve encountered in the years following their service.

I often share with folks that these Sweat Lodges have been among the most difficult, yet rewarding, healing experiences on my own path of recovery, growth, and transformation. Yesterday just reaffirmed this belief. I couldn’t be more grateful to have found this doorway - and to be allowed to hold it open for others.

If you would like to join us for future ceremonies or be added to our email list please feel free to reach out to me at tim.spalla@agilewg.org. We’d be happy to have you!

Another Sweat Lodge Ceremony complete!

This time 9 courageous souls followed a deeper calling, braving 35 degrees and snow on the ground, to enter in the Sacred Sweat Lodge and experience the incredible healing power of this ancient Ceremony. I am so proud of the Veterans, Healers and Therapist who showed up yesterday and deeply grateful for the time, patience and education provided by an incredible group of Native healers and singers who held such beautiful space for us.

I really missed having my two little guys there with me this time, but they were close to me in spirit through it all. At one point during the Ceremony, our guide shared with us just how deeply the Lakota people cherish their children – and using a phrase I’d never heard before - “Wakanyeja” or “Sacred Gift” – to describe how children are viewed and treated in their culture. In that moment, it became clear to me that this is the perfect description of just how deeply I cherish my own boys Harrison and Theodore. They are a Sacred Gift to me, their mother, and all those they touch with their love, kindness, compassion and laughter. They are the reason I keep at this difficult healing work because I know in my heart that this how I will show them my love and to honor them as my own Wakanyeja.

Aho.
