Brain injury is often invisible — but its impact is not.

More than 5.3 million Americans are living with a permanent brain injury disability.

Education and awareness are essential for improving prevention, recognition, and long-term support for survivors.

Most speech therapists and healthcare providers learn to recognize concussion symptoms.
Few are taught the true scale of traumatic brain injury in the United States.

Every year, 214,000+ people are hospitalized and nearly 70,000 die from traumatic brain injury.

👩🏼‍⚕️For medical speech-language pathologists and neuro clinicians, these aren’t just statistics. They represent patients navigating changes in memory, attention, language, emotional regulation, and identity after brain injury.

Brain injury is not rare — it is a major neurological public health issue.

🧠During Brain Injury Awareness Month, education is one of the most powerful ways we can reduce stigma and improve care.

🧠 For many people, the hardest part of brain injury recovery begins after leaving the hospital.

Speech-language pathologists see it every day—survivors navigating lasting changes in cognition, communication, swallowing, and identity while trying to find reliable resources.

This Brain Injury Awareness Month, TBI MedSLP is launching our 2026 fundraiser to expand brain injury education, outreach, and advocacy.

Proceeds will be shared {50/50} with the Brain Injury Association of America (BIAA) to strengthen national support for survivors, families, and speech-language pathologists working in neurorehabilitation.

If you believe in patient-centered neurorehabilitation and expanding access to brain injury resources, we invite you to help move this work forward.

Over 214,000 hospitalizations and nearly 70,000 deaths each year in the U.S. are linked to traumatic brain injury.

Brain injury is not rare. It is a major public health issue.

Falls, car accidents, sports injuries, and assaults are leading causes — and prevention matters.

March is Brain Injury Awareness Month 💚

An acquired brain injury (ABI) is any injury to the brain that happens after birth. That includes traumatic brain injury (TBI) from falls, car accidents, or sports — and also medical causes like stroke, lack of oxygen, tumors, infection, or overdose.

Many people think brain injury only means concussion.
It doesn’t.

Brain injuries can be invisible.
They can change memory, speech, sleep, emotions, focus, and identity.
And millions of Americans are living with the lifelong impact.

Understanding the difference between TBI and ABI (acquired brain injury) helps reduce stigma, improve prevention, and connect survivors to the right support.

Awareness leads to advocacy. Advocacy leads to change. 🧠💚

A concussion IS a brain injury. 🧠🚫

But here’s the part many people don’t realize:
➡️ A concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury (TBI).
➡️ Not all TBIs are concussions, but every concussion is a TBI.
➡️ Even “mild” concussions can have lasting effects if ignored or repeated.

That’s why awareness and prevention matter. Helmets, seatbelts, fall-proofing your home, and safe sports practices protect more than your head — they protect your future.

🧠Concussions aren’t just a “sports injury.”
In fact, the #1 cause of concussions in the U.S. is FALLS — not football tackles.

According to the CDC:
• 🚶 Falls = 47%
• 🚗 Car crashes = 17%
• ⚡ Assaults = 10%
• 🏀 Sports & recreation = 17%

👉 That means concussions can happen anywhere: at home, on the road, in the community, and yes—on the field. Awareness is prevention.
