Celebrating Black History Month

This February, as we honor Black History Month, we reflect on the contributions, resilience, and achievements of Black Americans throughout history and in our communities today.

Healthy Denver Inc., a Black-owned nonprofit, has proudly served the BIPOC community since 2018 working to dismantle health disparities caused by societal inequalities. Through the organization's five pillars— sports and recreation, food and nutrition, health and wellness, and music and art and kids' corner Healthy Denver Inc. brings vital resources to underserved communities, helping individuals live their healthiest lives.

Black History Month is not just a time to remember the past, but to celebrate the ongoing work of organizations and individuals building a more equitable future. We're proud to continue this legacy of service, empowerment, and community care.

From her early work as founder of a rural health clinic in Alabama to her role as U.S. Surgeon General, Dr. Regina Benjamin has championed preventative health care for everyone.

“My goal was to create a grassroots movement, to change our health care system from one focused on sickness and disease to a system focused on wellness and prevention,” she said.

Dr. Benjamin is a member of the American Heart Association Board of Directors and is the youngest person and the first Black Woman elected to the American Medical Association's Board of Trustees. Her focus on wellness and prevention of chronic diseases continues to shape the future of health.

As we recognize , we honor the leadership, care, and impact rooted in the Black community. By supporting access to CPR education and heart health information reflecting real experiences, together we help ensure everyone, everywhere has the opportunity for a longer, healthier life.

Want to be a part of something fun, exciting, and rewarding?

Join us this year as we operate one of the concession stands at Empower Field or Coors Field.

There are many exciting games and events coming to both venues, and we have the honor of being one of the non-profit organizations to receive a percentage of the proceeds. But we couldn’t do it without volunteers like you.

If this sounds interesting, please scan the QR code or visit the link to sign up. You must be 18 or older to volunteer, and 21+ if you want to be a shift lead. https://forms.gle/d6CVyhwaFB7cJ1eH9

Know Your Health, Take Action 💪🏾

The Reality:
Black Americans make up 12% of the U.S. population but account for 37% of new HIV infections, with diagnosis rates 8 times higher than white people. We’re also 35% more likely to experience heart disease.

The Good News:
HIV is preventable and manageable! Resources are available right here in our community.

Your Local Resources:
✅ Free HIV testing at community health centers
✅ PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) to prevent HIV—often FREE or low-cost
✅ Confidential counseling and support services
✅ Heart health screenings and wellness programs
✅ Culturally competent care providers who understand our community

Take Control:
• Get tested regularly—it’s quick, easy, and confidential
• Ask your doctor about PrEP if you’re at risk
• Check your blood pressure and cholesterol
• Connect with local health departments and community clinics

Remember:
Knowledge is power. Testing is prevention. Treatment is available. You deserve access to quality healthcare, and these resources exist to serve YOU.

📍 Find testing near you: Search “Denver free HIV testing” or call 211 for local health resources
