It can be hard to know how to best support your kid with dyslexia. Finding supports can be confusing, and many programs don't actually deliver the results they promise.

But the truth is that there are actually interventions that are evidence based and have been proven over many years. These interventions are not going to "fix" dyslexia because that's not a thing, and kids with dyslexia aren't broken. But these interventions will help your kid systematically build their reading skills ā¤ļø

October is Dyslexia Awareness Month šŸŽƒ

While most people have heard of dyslexia, it is often misunderstood. Like other types of neurodivergence, dyslexia impacts the way someone’s brain processes and stores information. This means that the impacts of dyslexia go far beyond reading and include both assets and challenges.

If you are looking for the best ways to support someone with dyslexia comment dyslexia and I’ll dm you my download on evidence based dyslexia interventions šŸ’›

The SNAP program will run out of money on November 1. If November payments don’t go through, it will disproportionately impact people with disabilities (and kids, who are 39% of SNAP recipients).

However, payments don’t need to stop! There is a $6 billion SNAP contingency fund that can be used but has not been tapped.

There is a script on the second page you can use to call your representative and senator. If you need their contact info, I’ll link to an easy way to look it up in my stories.

Halloween is almost here, which means candy everywhere. For many families, this is just fun —and that’s great. No need to overthink it! But some neurodivergent people really struggle with this constant candy access. If that’s your kid or you, you’re not alone!

If you want to hear more about why this happens and what to do about it, we did a whole podcast episode on it. Link in bio.

Today, a judge blocked the Oct 10th firings of 4,100+ federal employees, including 466 staff at the Department of Education, where the entire office of special education was gutted. This is good news!! But it doesn’t mean the work is done, this is just a temporary pause. You can use the provided script to reach out to your elected officials and urge them to oppose these cuts and work to protect students with disabilities.

If you are wondering who to contact, I would start with your federal representative and senators. The Department of Education and IDEA exist because of laws passed by the US Congress, so they have the most direct ability to push back on these laws not being upheld by the executive branch. If you need contact into for your elected officials, I will link a look up tool on my story.

If you want more info on what the Department of Ed does you can find that on images 3 & 4.

This week on the podcast we are talking about masking. Masking is central to the experience of many neurodivergent people and is also part of why neruodivergence is so often misunderstood.

Last Friday, another 466 staff were cut from the Department of Education. (If you want more info on that, I just posted about it, so check my page.)

Every time I post about the Department of Education, I get lots of great questions about what the department is. So let’s talk about it- What does the Department of Education actually do? How do they spend their budget? And how does their work impact students with disabilities in particular?

On October 10th, another 466 staff were cut from the Department of Education. We are still learning more about exactly who was cut, but we know that the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services, the Office of Elementary and Secondary Education, and the Office of Communications and Outreach lost all or almost all of their staff. These cuts are on top of the deep cuts last spring to the Office of Civil Rights, which investigates schools for discriminating against students with disabilities.

These cuts mean that while disability protections are still law, there will soon be almost no one at the Department of Education to enforce these laws, investigate cases, or support families.
You can use the provided script to reach out to your elected officials and urge them to oppose these cuts and work to protect students with disabilities.

As parents, we want our kids to be safe, so letting them do potentially dangerous things often feels scary. Instead of jumping to teaching the potentially dangerous skill right away, try focusing on building small related skills. When we take this one tiny step at a time approach, our kids are more successful because they can focus on learning one thing at a time. We, as parents, also feel better because each little step feels like the logical next thing, not like a big, dangerous leap.

Data from The Harris Poll which surveyed 522 kids aged 8 to 12 across the US in March of 2025.

Parent-teacher conferences can be really helpful, but they can also be a bit stressful, especially for parents of neurodivergent kids.

This week on the podcast, we talk about how to prepare for conferences and what questions to ask. Then, we discuss three scenarios that we have seen parents of neurodivergent kids encounter at conferences many times, and provide you with ideas on how to handle them.

We also created a little download to help you prepare for conferences, which includes a whole list of questions by topic to get you started.
Comment conference and I’ll DM you the link.

She has supported a broad range of children including those with learning disabilities, emotional and behavioral disorders, autism, and cognitive delays. She has worked with more than 500 children and families through her work with families and schools. She specializes in supporting students who experience attention difficulties, impulsivity, anxiety, or depression in developing their social-emotional, literacy, and organizational skills. Using a strengths-based perspective, she helps develop her clients to become the best versions of themselves.

What makes us different?

Our work is completely tailored to the needs of your child in your setting. We work with families in their homes (virtually) and in their schools instead of discretely working on skills in an office space that is nothing like the environments children struggle in. We don’t work alone. We coordinate our efforts with parents, teachers, and providers, so that we can best meet the needs of your child. We integrate behavioral and social supports in with academic support. It’s not one or the other. It is both.
