Tax season is here, and for our CO-AMTA members and other massage therapists that means getting organized, informed, and confident about your finances.

We wanted to post a little information for you all about tips, hoping it is helpful for you.

Federal (2025–2028)

Up to $25,000 of tip income can be deducted from federal taxable income (per the federal provision in effect for those years).
That means qualifying tips are exempt from federal income tax (up to the cap).
Tips are still subject to Social Security and Medicare (F**A) unless separately excluded.
Colorado (2025–2028)

Colorado does NOT follow the federal tip deduction.
In 2025, Governor Polis signed HB25-1296, which requires an add-back of the federal tip deduction when calculating Colorado taxable income.

Result:
Even if tips are deducted federally, they must be added back for Colorado.
Tips remain subject to Colorado’s 4.4% state income tax.
Practical Example

If you earn:

$25,000 in tips
You deduct the full $25,000 federally
Federal taxable income → reduced by $25,000
Colorado taxable income → you must add back that $25,000

Colorado tax on tips:

$25,000 Ă— 4.4% = $1,100 in Colorado income tax
Please be sure to ask your personal tax accountant to ensure compliance and accuracy for your situation.

We hope this helps you all!

We are thrilled to announce that Kathy Ginn will be teaching at the CO-AMTA 2026 Spring Convention—bringing two transformational ethics courses designed to elevate your practice, deepen your therapeutic relationships, and strengthen the foundation of your professional care.

Ethics as Right Use of Power – Using Your Power With Wisdom
Power is central to the work we do—and how we use it shapes client trust, safety, and healing. This course reframes power as relational energy and gives practitioners the skills to navigate role power, personal power, and the therapeutic differential with wisdom, clarity, and confidence.

Skill and Ethics as Self Care – Caring For Yourself Inside and Outside the Therapeutic Relationship. Burnout undermines presence and competence. This course explores self-care as an ethical responsibility—both inside the treatment room (right intention, boundaries, and power) and outside it (right action, replenishment, and sustainable service). Expect actionable insight and renewed purpose in your work.

Why This Matters
Modern clients expect not only skill but integrity, awareness, and relational intelligence. Kathy’s classes help practitioners cultivate ethical leadership, emotional agility, and long-term sustainability in practice.

About Kathy
A leader in Transformational Ethics since 1991, Kathy is the creator of Ethical Dimensions and an author, teacher, Hakomi-trained bodyworker, Body-centered Grief Companion, and End-of-Life Care Doula. She served as an advanced teacher with the Right Use of Power Institute and on the NCBTMB Ethics Committee for 8 years. Her courses are experiential, warm, and grounded in depth and relational rigor. All courses are NCBTMB Approved.
