Because many roads have not yet been plowed in Des Moines and surrounding areas, WesleyLife Meals on Wheels will not deliver meals today. Clients received "blizzard bags" of shelf-stable food earlier this week, and where possible, an extra meal will be delivered Monday.

You’re Invited! Conversations Across Generations is an intergenerational conversation-based program hosted by WesleyLife Meals on Wheels in partnership with Drake University’s Office of Community Engaged Learning that brings together multiple generations of students, community members and drake university professors to explore course related topics through guided conversation.

While we’re experiencing warm temps today, we’re always prepared for our clients! Thank you you to Wellabe for packing more than 275 shelf stable blizzard bags with items like peanut butter and crackers for our clients to keep on hand in case of inclement weather. ❄️

We appreciate this annual tradition and support for those we serve alongside Wellabe’s monthly volunteerism for Meals on Wheels!

This Valentine’s Day, love looks like warm meals, meaningful connections, and meeting real needs in our community. WesleyLife Meals on Wheels has teamed up with the Des Moines Area Religious Council to pilot a new food-pantry partnership that brings nutritious, ready-to-heat meals to older adults through local pantries. It’s care in action in every sense of the phrase.

Today we had the privilege of celebrating and thanking the Polk County Board of Supervisors for their generous Community Development Grant to WesleyLife Meals on Wheels. This investment supported critical infrastructure for our new ready‑to‑heat meal program, including expanded cold‑storage capacity and our brand‑new refrigerated van.

Thanks to a matching gift from Suzie Glazer Burt, the impact of this grant was doubled—allowing us to procure two vehicles to support both meal delivery and the distribution of fresh, hydroponically grown greens from our onsite Prairie Meadows Hydroponic Farm.

We are deeply grateful for partners who make our mission possible.

📸 Behind the scenes! 📸 Thanks to a grant from Meals on Wheels America, we’ve had the pleasure of working with Joe Crimmings to capture the unique bond between those we serve and their pets.

This week we visited Ken who is 98 years old, lives independently and walks his dog buddy regularly. Ken said about buddy: “he’s a great guy to have around” — we’re sure that Buddy would say the same. 🐶

We can’t wait to share the final stories and images!
