The easiest way to regulate your system is another human.
The easiest way to deregulate your system is another human.

6 years ago today I was recovering from yet another miscarriage.
3 back to back miscarriages and one surgery
5 years of hormonal issues, clinical ANA levels of my immune system and then my nervous system started joining in
4 years of panic attacks on my period for a whole night of somatic horror, then my ovulation, then my system started not to feel safe in many situations: traffic, closed spaces, heights.

These are symptoms of a stressed out systemI went through it alone, tried every thing you can think of, changed 5 doctors, changed my diet, my way of living ...
I was told everything from "it's nothing" to "just go to sleep" to "you are crazy"

My body was always feeling unsafe because I was struggling alone. Be your advocate! Find the right practitioner and definitely find your people! Somatic Experiencing fellows have made me realize my system was running on empty and dedicated to others but myself!
Walk away from toxicity!
Find people that help you thrive!

I have spent the last 10 plus Mother's Day at a soccer field.
Did I like it, no
Did it make a difference in me being a "good" mother? d
Depending on who you ask in this "family", you will get very different answers.

What I know is that I want to spend quality time with my kids, slow living... waking up with them in my bed every morning, going to bed after long conversations over dinner, big belly laughters, dancing, normalizing being out of the box and chasing their true nature!

While that has not always been the reality for me, I can still bring the felt sense of that into every day: being aware of the friendships they make wherever we are, the nature we pass by every day whether we run to soccer or not, the support they get from there role models, the laughter in not taking things too seriously and the important thing they learn when they play and especially the they lose - How do you heal yourself and thrive! How do you stay connected to yourself with whatever the day brings you?

I have been on both sides, a mother and a person listening to the other mother putting herself down for the standards they are being asked to live by.
Every day in my practice we have to redefine where being a mother and your "being" intersects. Where do you find the balance in your system while you are attending to both on a daily!

I want to say some, but most of us lose ourselves in the family, the kids, the wife and at the end we get resentment.
Because you can't make everybody happy while you are running on empty! Also, you don't have to make everybody happy! Read that again!

I hope you get to spend today and everyday being true to yourself so you can be the best version your kids need!

Today is Native American Heritage Day, thanks to legislation signed by President Obama that permanently designates the Friday after Thanksgiving Day each year as a day of honoring American Indian and Alaska Native cultural heritage and tribal sovereignty.

As a therapist, that dedicates her time to empowering the disenfranchised population, I recognize the systematic and transgenerational trauma that continues to influence their people today.

I recognize that I am able to do what I do due to the sacrifice of many, on the contemporary and ancestral homelands of three Anishinaabe nations of the Council of Three Fires: the Ojibwe, Ottawa, and Potawatomi.

Trauma is a buzz word now. Some people believe we use it too much. Because trauma is on a spectrum, like everything else.
We should understand the definition of trauma as simple as how it affects our system ➡️

Trauma defined as such is impacting women more and they develop more stress related disorders.

Women are socialized to be caregivers, to care more for others than themselves and to overwork.

Any minority, besides being a woman, would experience this pressure to fight, as a nervous system response, even more.

As we age, we get to a point where our bodies can't work at that rate anymore, our bodies are actually yelling at us: STOP.

Our body is the answer to start to heal from these automatic thoughts, beliefs and nervous system patterns that ran our life until now.
Trauma comes out to offer us not only pain but also wisdom.

Thank you for allowing me to be a part of a very important conversation in women's health!
Talking about perimenopause /menopause should be a topic any practitioner holds space for with their clients.

This is a time when trauma comes out, but also wisdom! Navigating them with a support system is the most important! Tap into your women friends and ancestors!

Thank you ladies for your wisdom and inspiration!

What are your anchors into safety?

Anchor is defined as "something that serves to hold an object firmly"

Our system tends to go into fight, flight, freeze or fawn for many perceived threats.
Intentionally bringing safety back into our body helps us come back into rest and relaxation part of our nervous system.

➡️ five ways to trigger automatic cues of safety in your body

𝕎𝕙𝕪 𝕊𝕠𝕞𝕒𝕥𝕚𝕔 𝔼𝕩𝕡𝕖𝕣𝕚𝕖𝕟𝕔𝕚𝕟𝕘?

Today marks 1 year since I found out the answer of a 5 year terror journey - mold intoxication. (whole different post about advocating for self and your fam)

In 2017 it took me 3 full days to realize I was experiencing severe nervous system symptoms, not flu, not body lethargy, not something completely physical. This was 9 years into working in mental health. My somatic symptoms escalated and changed throughout the years from panic to whole night terrors, palpitations, claustrophobia, completely collapsed but also hyperactivated...the list goes on.
Yes, my medical issues were complex and the threat was internal but the way my nervous system responded was deep and probably the response of a system tired of holding on to different traumas and defense patterns. I did not know how to deal with these with all my experience. There was nothing that was stopping them, I just had to ride the waves. The problem with that is that the body keeps the score - every experience conditioned it for reacting the same in the next situations: every period, every office, every airplane, every hotel...too small, too wide, too high... everything was a threat. And I was going mad! My body was in survival mode and I was a therapist, a functioning mom of two and running a whole successful business. (again a different post about female productivity)

The day I discovered Somatic Experiencing and started therapy was the day I changed my way of looking at the nervous system, at my lifestyle, at therapy in general. The support of my therapist and the SE community was half the battle, I felt safe, I had some answers and modalities that worked!

Even with medical issues (chronic pain, miscarriages, hormonal issues etc) working on the capacity of your nervous system gives you back the power! SE helped me restructure my system, release trapped traumas and complete defense instincts in the face of illness and every day stress.

Somatic Experiencing touched not just my journey towards healing but everyone's I work with and who they come into contact with!

So good to be part of the community!

SE is a lifestyle for me, but it also gives me the capacity to work with issues from stress to complex trauma.

Somatic experiencing is helping you complete self-preserving motor defenses that did not take place at the time of the event, and get rid of thwarted energy in your body.
These events can vary from recurring fights in your relationships to a very traumatic event.

Do you need some support?

This week is su***de awareness week.
We really should be comfortable sharing and asking about su***de. Substance abuse or su***de are the only causes of death kept secret many times.

The stigma against su***de is still confusing to me after 15 years.
This subject is dear to my heart because when I started in 2008 , all the people in the psych unit were there for it. When I moved to outpatient I realized that just because I asked, these clients were also mostly suicidal.

I trained as a crisis therapist and I hope I supported lots of people through dark times. It's about care, empathy, attention to detail. I would call clients every other day and not be afraid to ask. Sometimes the answer was "I was thinking to do it today after work"
The discussions are tough but so are we!
TALK ABOUT IT!
STOP THE STIGMA!
AND TRAIN ALL PUBLIC SERVICE ASSISTANTS!

A new client said to me the other day "I probably need anger management classes too".
There are so many misconceptions, even in the field of mental health, about anger. We start by telling our kids "don't be mad" and continue telling adults to either repress it with "coping skills" or go into rage rooms where they MINDLESSLY try to release some of this super energy dragging our body down.

💚 Anger is a natural defense response

💚 Anger is associated with powerless because we were interrupted in the fight or flight response over and over growing up

💚 Anger is necessary to restore these fight or flight responses needed to heal

💚 Most importantly, people freeze when not fight or flight is available. We can't come out of freeze without sometimes anger or sometimes panic or some related energy.

💚 ANGER IS GETTING YOUR POWER BACK WHEN YOU DO IT SLOWLY AND MINDFULLY

The first thing I like to do in my practice is reframe our views on our symptoms. Our symptoms are natural reactions of our nervous system that reflect what we are going through. Your nervous system will naturally activate to take you through your busy times, but it will also push the breaks when you are disconnected from your body and don't recognize the limits.
If we see panic attacks and the somatic discomfort that comes with it as a natural discharge of energy of an overwhelmed nervous system that they are we tend to accept them.
If we see ourselves as helpless "sick" people, that immediately fuels our panic or hopelessness. Which means layers upon layers of other labels and negative energy that we are adding to an already challenged nervous system.
Wherever you are, your system has a reason it's there! Your body knows what to do! Let's reconnect to our instinctual tendencies to heal!
