Cervical checks give an overview of dilation and effacement. Dilation and effacement help baby down and out of the womb. If you are not in labor, it doesn't matter how dilated or effaced your cervix is.

If you are in labor, it is still not necessary to know how dilated you are (unless labor has been ongoing for quite some time).

You can, and should, decline cervical checks during pregnancy. You can also decline cervical checks during labor. Your body knows what to do....trust it!
