Had a great time at the National Forum Conference discussing equity in youth investment and nonprofit leadership! Equity isn’t just what is given to you, but it is also what you give to yourself. As servant leaders, community workers, and anyone who pours out to others, we must first take care of ourselves. If not, we eventually won’t have it to give. We just won’t.

Being a mom to a teenage girl is not for the faint at heart. Our girls begin forming into young women and can often become a mirror for ourselves- who we were, who we are and the in between of all of our perceived short comings. This can lead us moms into a whirlwind of anxiety. Most of the time it’s from a sincere place. We love our girls and we want for them to be the best and have the best. Better versions of us. But that anxiety often comes out as forms of control- the one thing they are going to buck against in the teenage years. So here is what I learned⬇️

👉🏾My daughter was a unique version of herself-not me
👉🏾I had to stop trying to exert control over her based on what I wanted her journey to be and embrace who she was and where she was
👉🏾I had to learn to enjoy each stage of her life. Her as a 12 year old, the 16 year old and now the 27 year old. I get to have new and different relationships with her as she grows.

It may seem hard now. But they do come back around to you. Enjoy the journey Mommas!

Have you ever heard of the term “weathering”? When I first heard it described as an actual adverse health outcome due to chronic exposure to stress and discrimination, an example was given of an old house, with the wood and metal beaten by the heat, cold, rain, snow, ice, and other elements. The house shows the wear and tear of the weathering process, but is still standing. The house may even look like it has “character” due to what it has endured and been exposed to. I think we are “weathered”. We are actually weathering everyday. The storms keep coming. Do you feel weathered? 🙏🏽
