🌌♥️Closing out Women’s History Month with a commissioned poem for The Colored Girls Museum March 2026 exhibition curated by Omo Misha.

The prompt: me, myself, personally.
I didn’t answer it alone.

I asked 45 women to finish the sentence.
All 45 responded.

What came back was layered, vulnerable, honest… familiar.

A reminder that even in our differences, we are often speaking from the same place.

This poem was created as a looping audio work inside an exhibition.

So yes, it’s long. Its heavy. But it’s truth.
Yes, it asks you to slow down.

Maybe Facebook isn’t built for that.
But maybe we still are.
Sit with it. Let it breathe.

Q1 Reflections ✍🏽 🕯️ 💃🏽

“The world can be burning, and I can still choose to live fully inside my life…not out of ignorance, but out of reverence for being here at all.”

Thoughts:

As a child, reading history books, I used to wonder
How did people lead ordinary lives while somewhere else, catastrophe was happening?

How did this not affect them too? 🧐

History tends to leave something out.
The personal…everyday stories that connected the dots.

The world has always held suffering.
And people still lived inside it.
Not because they didn’t care
but because life keeps asking to be lived anyway.

That’s why I love storytelling
It keeps history human.
It shows us not just what happened
but how people chose to make it through.
What they did about it.
What they accepted, and didn’t.

Things to keep in mind:

1.Don’t get stuck performing suffering.
2.Don’t use global grief to deepen personal stagnation.
3.Don’t deny yourself joy out of guilt.

Because that doesn’t actually serve anyone.

Multiple truths exist at once.
Grief and beauty.
Suffering and celebration.
The world… and your life.

If you don’t accept that, you will freeze.
And your story will too.

Feel deeply.
Be human.
And still…
choose to live.

This poem was written live. ✍🏽
In the room, with the room.

Honored to have been commissioned by the Community Foundation of Greater Flint to create a live poem during the National Day of Racial Healing in Flint. Written in real time through deep listening and presence, the poem became a set of poetic meeting minutes shaped by the conversations, intentions, and collective spirit in the room.
