The Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency (MVAA) reminds veterans and their families that benefits counseling and assistance is always free through county offices and MVAA.

“While the vast majority of Michigan county veteran offices work tirelessly, we want to make it clear to veterans that benefits assistance is, and will always be available free of charge,” MVAA Director Jeff Barnes said. “You have earned your benefits through your service to our nation, and county, state and accredited veterans service organizations will do all they can to help you access those benefits.”

REBOOT Program Helps a Vietnam Veteran Reinvent Himself

“This program changed my life,” said Vietnam veteran James Howard as he accepted his Michigan REBOOT certificate of completion. “I’ll travel wherever I need to go to tell others about this program. They need to know there is something out there for them.”

Howard, 54, recently completed a three-week workshop hosted by the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency (MVAA) that provides training to address personal, social and professional aspects of the transition from military to civilian life. Developed by the National Veterans Transition Services, Inc., each REBOOT Workshop offers education designed to enhance previous experience and develop new skills. While the workshops are geared primarily for Post-9/11 veterans, they are open to all veterans regardless of service era or discharge status.

MVAA will host three additional Michigan REBOOT Workshops in 2015 and online registration is open for these sessions:

March 16-April 3, 2015 (Women veterans only) – Southeast Michigan
April 27-May 15, 2015 – Lansing
June 1-19, 2015 – Grand Rapids

Colder temperatures are setting in across Michigan, leaving many people cooped up indoors and looking for something to do. While sitting down with a good book can be an enjoyable and warm way to pass the time this winter, some Michigan veterans may be unable to read standard print books. For those veterans, the Braille and Talking Book Library is a great asset, offering state veterans access to the latest best sellers for free!
