Today, our nation pauses to honor the brave individuals who have served in the United States Armed Forces.
Veterans Day is a time to reflect on the courage and unwavering dedication of those who stood in defense of our nation, both at home and abroad. Their service reminds us of what it means to put others first and to protect what matters most.
At CAL FIRE, we’re proud to have many veterans in our workforce. The same sense of duty and teamwork that defined their time serving inspires our work in protecting lives, property, and natural resources every day.
To all veterans, thank you for your service, your courage, and your continued commitment to others.

Honor Procession for Susan “Suzie” Smith

The family of Suzie Smith would like to notify the public of an honor procession for Suzie who died as a result of her injuries sustained in a helicopter crash on Highway 50 in Sacramento.
On Sunday, October 12, 2025, at approximately 1:00 PM Reach will honor Suzie with her final flight. She will be flown from Sacramento to Red Bluff, California, where, at approximately 2:00 PM, she will be transported via ground ambulance to Palo Cedro, California. From Red Bluff there will be a procession of immediate family and numerous EMS and Law Enforcement escorting her home to Palo Cedro.
The family advises if the public wants to honor Suzie, and the numerous EMS agencies in Northern California, feel free to stage along the route. Please do not stop on the freeway or block side streets.
The route will be I-5, NB from SR-36 in Red Bluff, North on I-5 to SR-44 east in the Redding Area. SR-44 to SB on Deschutes Road to Allen and Dahl Funeral home.
There will be no public parking at the Funeral home nor will there be an opportunity to contact the family. The family is in the planning stages for a Celebration of Life in the near future where the public will have an opportunity to pay their respects.
Additionally, a memorial foundation, “Our Angel That Flies Foundation” is being established to Honor Suzie’s legacy. The foundation will established to further the work Sue started in the mission field, nursing scholarships, and other causes she was passionate about.

Our deepest sympathy goes out to Suzie’s family and her EMS family of whom we are part.
She was one of the very best. 💔 RIP

Our REACH family is devastated to share that Susan “Suzie” Smith has passed away from injuries sustained during the accident involving helicopter N414RX on Highway 50 on Monday night.

We will remember Suzie as a pillar of the EMS and healthcare community who saved countless lives by delivering compassionate care in their darkest hours. Suzie’s 50-year career as a nurse included nearly 21 years with REACH, and we are proud to call her our colleague and friend. We hope she is remembered for the light she brought to every call, every shift, and every patient she blessed with her care.

We grieve Suzie’s loss with her family, friends, colleagues and the entire community that she faithfully served. Her impact will be felt for years to come through the lives she touched, the teams she strengthened, and the compassion she embodied. Thank you for keeping Suzie’s loved ones and our REACH family in your thoughts and support for our team during this difficult time.

An update on the REACH crew.
We all wish them a strong recovery ❤️‍🩹

Our team members remain hospitalized, and we want to assure everyone that they are receiving the very best care. We know this is a difficult time for their families, friends, and colleagues, and our thoughts are with them as we hope for healing and recovery.

The individuals involved are:
• Pilot Chad Millward, who is in critical yet stable condition;
• Flight Paramedic Margaret "DeDe" Davis, who is likewise critical but stable; and
• Flight Nurse Susan "Suzie" Smith, who remains in critical and unstable condition.

On behalf of our crew, their families and REACH, we extend heartfelt thanks to the bystanders who helped during their rescue. We deeply appreciate those who became first responders by supporting our flight crews during their time of need and showed exceptional courage during this crucial moment.

Regarding the accident itself, it is standard aviation protocol for all inquiries to be handled directly by the NTSB. This is essential to protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation, and therefore we encourage all questions related to the incident to be directed to them. We are fully cooperating with the NTSB and FAA in their investigation and will continue to assist them as needed.
