Gurudevi Swami Nirmalananda Saraswati

Gurudevi Swami Nirmalananda Saraswati Swami Nirmalananda Saraswati is the spiritual head of the Svaroopa® Vidya Ashram. We call her Gurudevi, which means Divine Teacher.

She was honored with the title "Sadguru" in 2015 by the Brahmin priests in her Guru's home town of Ganeshpuri. Satguru Swami Nirmalananda Saraswati is the spiritual head of the Svaroopa® Vidya Ashram in Downingtown, PA. She has dedicated her life to serving those who yearn to become Self-Realized. A modern-day sage and Guru, she awakens Kundalini, your inner spiritual energy, through Shaktipat. As a Shaktipat Guru, she propels you into the recognition of your inherent Divinity. She supports your process of seeing the Divine in everyone and everything. The Ashram runs Lokananda (“Bliss Place”), a full-service retreat facility, in Downingtown. There, Gurudevi offers Shaktipat, meditation and yoga healing retreats. Many of these immersions are available online as well. The Ashram also offers professional training courses for yoga teachers, yoga therapists and meditation teachers. Weekly, Gurudevi offers satsangs (spiritual teachings) including chanting, meditation and discourses to guide you on your path. These profound yet accessible teachings are recorded and offered as podcasts to you here. With Gurudevi as your teacher, the inner journey is deep and easy. She also writes monthly teaching articles. You’ll find several years of these articles recorded here as well as recordings of traditional stories from the insightful lessons of yoga. Gurudevi’s teaching is based in the ancient wisdom of Kashmiri Shaivism. In “Yoga, Sweat and Mysticism,” an article written for Yoga Alliance, she explains the essence of yoga:

"Yoga itself claims to be a science. It uses proven methodology to get predictable results, just like the battery in your car. On the physical level, the methodologies provide reliable results, often likened to medical therapies, yet the sages always targeted a deeper goal… [to] become one with Consciousness… to know your own Divine Self (svaroopa), inherent within you. The results are reliable: if you do what the sages teach, you will experience what they promise. This is yoga — pure mysticism, meaning it is about the mystery of life, the mystery that is hidden inside every human heart and being." This perspective informs Gurudevi Nirmalananda’s teaching. Warm, lighthearted and down-to-earth, she makes the mystical teachings accessible through examples from our everyday lives and relationships. Students cherish their relationship with Gurudevi Nirmalananda. It carries them forward into yoga’s ancient promise. Longtime students describe the Guru’s power:

"Gurudevi Nirmalananda never ceases to amaze me… she is a master teacher and is both forthcoming and real in every moment."

— Rosemary (Rudrani) Nogue, Calgary AB, Canada

"Her presence is like tapping into the main stream. The hot socket."

— Lori (Priya) Kenney, Portland OR

Gurudevi Nirmalananda credits her own Guru, Swami Muktananda, with everything. Years of living in his Ashrams in the USA, Europe and India allowed her to indulge her total focus on his teachings. Now Gurudevi Nirmalananda ensures these ancient teachings are alive and thriving, in online and onsite offerings.

When you look inward, more accurately, when you settle inward, deepening into your own Self, you are expanding.

Looking outward is a process of narrowing your field of vision, narrowing your mind and heart, so you hone in on single objects or people, as though they could fulfill you.

Looking inward is a process of deepening into the source of your own being, the source of intelligence, creativity, love and joy and wisdom, the source of the universe.

As you deepen inward, you expand and discover that the whole universe is contained within you.

Yes, it’s huge. Bigger than huge.

This is your own Self.

When you are based in your own Self, you see all the different things, all the different people like different blossoms on the one shrub. For there is only One, being all. And when you don’t see the One hidden in Her divine disguise, as the person sitting next to you, as the driver of the car turning into your lane, as the neighbor walking their dog... — Gurudevi Nirmalananda

The Gift of Grace

Welcome to our year-end fundraiser — themed “The Gift of Grace.” I hope you will join me in yoga’s practice of dakshina (selfless financial giving).

Consciousness has contracted to become us by concealing our inherent Divinity. This is our human condition. Yet we are also given the decoder ring, known as Grace.

Receiving this gift, we can know our own Self. We can uncover the Divinity that has always been within, being us. Gurudevi is fueled by the light of Consciousness and she wants us to be as well.

I remember a time in my life when I was going through a loss…

When you’re walking down the street and someone calls your name, what do you do? You turn your head and respond. Our world is based on response. In biology and psychology, it’s called stimulus-response.

Yoga calls it reciprocal adaptation. You have the ability to respond, so you do. And when something needs to be done, and you see it and respond - you gain the responsibility for doing it again.

Is tis a burden? Or is it a joy to contribute, to care for others, to make the world a better place?

🛶⛵🌦😎😊

The trick is to deal with Maayaa without getting lost in it, to be in the midst of your life without being overwhelmed by it. It's not about transcending Maayaa, it's about navigating Maayaa.

Even when you become Self-Realized, you're still going to have a body and you're still going to live in the world, and it's still going to rain and...

Get Familiar with Bliss

If you know that doing some yoga or repeating mantra for five minutes will make you happy, and it will, sometimes you simply won’t do it. It’s like you prefer being unhappy to being happy. Well, maybe it’s familiar. And I’d like to rescue you… — Gurudevi Nirmalananda

Searching for Happiness

To search for happiness is like trying to drink water from a mirage. As you get closer and closer to what looks like a lake, it fades and disappears. And you’re still thirsty.

The same thing happens in relationships. You make a new friend, who seems to be on the same wavelength as you. After a while you find some discrepancies, some flaws, some imperfections – so do you stay in the relationship or not? And if they are a relative, now what?

Are you looking outside for your bliss or are you looking inside? If you look outward, your bliss will be temporary, impure and even cause pain. You are fueled by the delusion that the illusion will make you happy…

Illumined Action

💡🌞💖🕉

Sometimes you just know. In the midst of life, you know exactly what to do. Illumined action. Wouldn’t you like to live this way?

Yoga says you can. Tune in to your own inner light. Let your Divine Essence shine through your mind and heart.

To live this way, base yourself in your own Self, drawing from your inner depth and dimensionality in every moment. In every breath.

First, you delve inward to find your own Self. Then you…

Your mind is designed to measure and evaluate. You were even trained in how to do this in your schooling — compare and contrast, similarities and differences, Venn diagrams and T-charts.

You do it with shopping, looking for the best product at the best price. You do it with other people, always judging, comparing and contrasting, seeing how they measure up. You do it with yourself — judging, comparing and contrasting, seeing how you measure up. This is what causes your pain.

Measuring, gauging, calculating, assessing, ranking, reckoning, pronouncing a verdict – your mind works overtime! This is Maayaa.

Maayaa is the energy of Consciousness, applying itself to fragmenting Consciousness into little bits. Then you compare the bits to each other. Your mind works overtime at tearing you apart. You cut yourself down to size.

Your essence is Divine Consciousness, concentrated in a unique and individualized form. But you compare your individuality to everyone else’s – and you can always find...

It is your mind which causes your suffering, by its constant wandering. When you quiet your mind, you discover the deeper dimension within. This is the true purpose of meditation, to make you aware of your own true nature as Consciousness.

Buddha was right - when you follow your mind, you create your own pain. Yoga is right - when you discover your deeper essence, all suffering and delusion melt away.
