So much fun with the amazing members of ! We learned about common postural issues with the neck and shoulder, ways to better care for our body to reduce risk of injury, and how to improve neck strength and alignment during classes.

So, friendly reminder: make sure to hold onto your cuties (or preferred citrus fruit) during ab work without juicing it!!! 😅

🚨JANUARY PATIENT OF THE MONTH🚨
Brittany!
Brittany came to us after feeling a dull and aching pain in her upper back, shoulders, and chest. She had no idea what was causing this, and her body was responding as if she had a major injury. Through the following months her muscle tightness increased and began twitching uncontrollably. By the end of the month, she developed a few adhesions in her neck causing intense and uncontrollable pain.

Here is her rehab journey:

💪🏼Biggest challenge: I am very active. I teach fitness classes a few times a week and I enjoy movement daily. But my pain got to a point that couldn’t sleep or function well throughout the day. Now, I am having to modify and scale back in my workouts to ensure I am not re-injuring myself. It is hard when you reach a level in your strength training you feel good about, but then have to take a few steps back to support proper recovery.

💪🏼What ways has PT helped you overcome this challenge and get to where you are now: PT has helped me think more often about the connectivity of the body and how everything works together. My body was trying to protect itself after my injury but overcompensated in certain ways that caused more harm. PT has shown me how I can help my muscles recover in the right ways encouraging the proper healing and strengthening.

💪🏼Anything else you would like to share: I learned through this experience that my injury may have been partially impacted by stress. My mind wasn’t processing some hard things I was going through last year, so my feelings got pushed into my body and that likely kickstarted the injury. I encourage anyone reading this to take a moment and realize how your mood impacts your body and the next time things get hard, don’t ignore them. Because if your mind doesn’t process the emotion, the body will certainly try to.

Octobers patient of the month is Jessica! She is an instructor at Pure Barre.

Here is her testament:

“Taught a great Align class at Pure Barre North Raleigh tonight! I absolutely love teaching this new class format because it’s so vital to overall health.
This new class guides you through breath-driven movement to improve mobility, increase core strength, stability, address imbalances, and body alignment.
As someone who has dedicated roughly a dozen hours a week, since June, working through some pretty nasty spinal stenosis, disc herniation & nerve pain — with the help of Caitlin Rose - I know how critical consistent mobility work is.”

We are so proud of you for all your hard work Jessica!

Common yoga poses can encourage those with hypermobility or hEDS to push to their greatest range of motion, and this can worsen symptoms of chronic pain and joint misalignment. Over the next 5 days we are going to offer a guide to modify popular yoga poses to better protect hypermobile joints.

‼️IMPORTANT: This is not meant to compare or scrutinize different bodies, it is a tool to provide cues for those with hypermobility or hEDS to reduce pain and symptoms‼️

EDS awareness is something that we are very passionate about at Beyond Physical Therapy. We often see patients with hypermobility, particularly those who are in the performing arts. Because of their hypermobility, they excel in areas such as flexibility and continuously push themselves to their furthest range of motion. This is harmful to their bodies and without proper education and modification, symptoms will continue to worsen. Here at Beyond Physical Therapy, we identify symptoms of hypermobility and this largely impacts how we approach care. We are often the first providers to offer validation and understanding of symptoms that have previously been unexplained or even dismissed by other types of providers. To learn more about hEDS symptoms and management, stay tuned for our 5-week series through May!

Hey everyone! It’s been a while since I’ve posted, and I wanted to introduce myself to everyone who’s new here. My name is Caitlin and I am the owner of Beyond Physical Therapy and a licensed physical therapist with a specialization in orthopedics.

It has been my mission to reinvent the standard of care in physical therapy. Through many, many years working as an orthopedic outpatient physical therapist, I saw the standard of care continue to worsen as patient loads increased and exercise prescriptions became less personalized. I knew that I needed to do something different because this treatment style didn’t align with my values and expertise as a physical therapist. My experience in the corporate physical therapy industry is what led me to open my own practice, so I can give my patients the care and attention they need and deserve.

Here at Beyond Physical Therapy, we will never dismiss or undermine your pain, and we never settle for the diagnosis of “chronic pain”. We understand that your body is unique and we want to treat your pain or injury using a personalized approach and provide you with the knowledge to take control of your health. We want all of our patients to walk away feeling seen, heard, and hopeful for their future of pain free movement!

To further spread education and insight on what we do, we are going to take this social media thing to the next level! Follow and share this account to see:

Here the reality: “cookie cutter” physical therapy is a result of many challenges in the in-network/corporate PT world.

One major obstacle is that your PT likely has to see 16-25 patients a day to be “productive”. So you will rarely get more than 15 minutes with the actual physical therapist.

Another obstacle is that in order for a company to be profitable, they need each patient to be seen on average 15 visits. ON AVERAGE. The average number of visits at Beyond Physical Therapy is 8!

How is this possible? Well, we make sure the patient is our client (not the insurance company) so we can focus on their specific needs and deliver high quality one on one care by a Doctor of Physical Therapy. The result? Better short and long term outcomes, less time commitment, in many cases LESS money spent, and less likelihood for reoccurrences in the future.
