𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐓𝐞𝐭𝐨𝐧 𝐕𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐲 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧?
Due to the remote location of our hospital and nature of how healthcare is administered in the U.S., Teton Valley Health Care has consistently faced three significant challenges to remaining profitable.

1. Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement is insufficient to cover the increasing cost of providing healthcare.
2. Increasing delays and barriers to getting paid in a timely manner by insurance companies.
3. Increasing cost of labor, especially when having to fill staff vacancies with contracted labor.

All rural healthcare providers face these same challenges. In addition, our community’s cost of living requires us to pay higher wages to attract and retain staff at Teton Valley Health Care.

𝐈𝐬 𝐛𝐚𝐧𝐤𝐫𝐮𝐩𝐭𝐜𝐲 𝐨𝐫 𝐜𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐨𝐨𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐧 𝐢𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐫𝐧?
No. TVHC has very recently secured sufficient philanthropic support to ensure continued operations while hospital leadership and the Board of Directors determine the best option for long-term sustainability.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐩𝐬 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐧 𝐬𝐨 𝐟𝐚r?
TVHC leadership and the Board have taken several proactive steps, including:

1. Conducting extensive discussions with local and state elected officials to explore emergency support and potential solutions.
2. Securing philanthropic commitments that can support operations while long-term options are evaluated.
3. Holding initial exploratory conversations with hospitals and hospital groups.
4. Potential future pathways include: becoming a taxing district, remaining independent, or aligning with another healthcare entity.

𝐀𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬?
Yes. While the Board has not yet decided the priority level or role that alignment with another healthcare entity may play in the final plan, several organizations have expressed interest and are continuing conversations. This process will take multiple conversations and due diligence over several months to reach a point of making an informed decision.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐨𝐚𝐫𝐝’𝐬 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠-𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐦 𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧?
The Board is currently working through a thoughtful process to define TVHC’s primary goals, secondary options, and the overall long-term plan. Once that work is complete, the plan will be communicated openly with the community.

𝐀𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐧 𝐚𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝?
Yes. We are seeing encouraging signs. Patient volumes are increasing. Unusual and one-time expenses are now behind us. Cost-control efforts—including workforce restructuring—are beginning to show positive results.

𝐂𝐚𝐧 𝐰𝐞 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐓𝐕𝐇𝐂’𝐬 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐚 𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐲?
No. Our goal is to continue delivering the same services we are offering now and bring back infusion services as soon as it is possible. We aim to find a long-term solution that gives us the stability and the structure to meet the needs of this growing community, well into the future.

𝐂𝐚𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐚𝐝𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬?
While we cannot discuss individual HR matters, we can share the broader context. These have been difficult and uncertain times for TVHC. During periods of organizational stress, it is not unusual for employees to make decisions based on what is best for themselves and their families. We respect those decisions wholeheartedly and appreciate their service. Their absence will be felt.

𝐀𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐥𝐚𝐲𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐬 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝?
No, we do not have any plans for additional layoffs. In fact, we have been able to bring back a few of the employees whose jobs were previously eliminated.

𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐈 𝐤𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐭 𝐓𝐕𝐇𝐂?
A representative from TVHC will be presenting monthly updates at Seniors West of the Tetons (SWOT) the last Wednesday of each month at the Community Center in Driggs. That gathering allows us to share current information and respond to questions from the public. In addition, we are providing weekly updates through our social media platforms and plan to share these same community updates on our website at tvhcare.org so information remains accessible for everyone.

Again, we acknowledge the concerns and frustrations that have arisen over the past few months. Please know we are determined to find solutions that will strengthen our ability to provide excellent health care to the people of Teton Valley and beyond.

We’re proud to have Dr. Eric Kraska serving our community here at Teton Valley Health Care!

A graduate of the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center with residency training at Hennepin County Medical Center, he brings decades of emergency medicine experience to our team. He has taught residents and medical students across the country—and even internationally in Australia.

In addition to caring for patients locally, Lt. Colonel Kraska serves in the United States Air Force National Guard as part of a Critical Care Air Transport Team, helping transport critically ill patients worldwide.

When he’s off duty, you’ll find him skiing, biking, or fly fishing with his wife and two grown children. We’re grateful for his dedication—both here at home and beyond.

We have received feedback that many of you may be experiencing issues contacting the Hospital or our Health Clinics. Silver Star Communications has indicated an outage effecting some users/carriers. Our phones are receiving calls and we have found this to be an individual carrier issue.

Update: We have resolved the local voice connection issue impacting customers in and around the Pocatello, Idaho area. The issue was determined to be a fiber connections within Lumens Network. If your voice services have not been restored, please contact our technical support team.

With over 11 years of experience in emergency medicine, Dr. Ward is passionate about providing high-quality, compassionate care when patients need it most. She is especially drawn to rural medicine, where she can make a meaningful impact by ensuring her community has access to timely, expert care close to home.

Dr. Ward is board-certified in Emergency Medicine and brings a broad range of experience. Prior to joining Teton Valley Health Care, she spent seven years working with a private physician group in Salt Lake City, providing emergency care across multiple Intermountain hospitals. Dr. Ward earned her medical degree from the University of Vermont College of Medicine, followed by residency training at the University of Utah. Her training and professional experience have shaped her commitment to delivering excellent care in both high-volume and rural healthcare environments.

She and her family were excited to relocate to Teton Valley to be part of a close-knit community. Dr. Ward values seeing her patients outside the hospital—around town, on the trails, and in everyday life—because it reinforces her connection to the people she serves and the importance of accessible local healthcare.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Ward enjoys running, biking, and skiing, and loves spending time outdoors with her family and their dogs. She is grateful to call Teton Valley home and looks forward to caring for the community for years to come.
