Kathy Bates took home Best TV Actress at the Movies for Grownups Awards with AARP for her powerful performance in Matlock, and her acceptance speech was a reminder of why representation at EVERY age matters.
“When we aren’t reflected in those stories...we all start to feel unseen and invisible," she said.

Kathy Bates won Best TV Actress at the Movies for Grownups Awards with AARP, recognizing her titular role on "Matlock."
Stories shape how we see ourselves and how others see our potential, she told the crowd during her acceptance speech. “When we aren’t reflected in those stories ... we all start to feel unseen and invisible," she said. "People stop noticing us."
Like her character, Bates embodies the power of visibility — being seen for who you are and realizing your potential at any age.
“Our show speaks to all ages, but in particular grownup audiences,” said her co-star Jason Ritter, who presented her with the award. “It was created in response to ageism in society and especially Hollywood.”
By challenging ageist stereotypes and putting experience center stage, the show and Bates' performance in it, prove that talent, relevance and power don’t fade with age — they deepen.
