Calling all family caregivers!

A new proposal in Congress could help ease some of the financial strain that often comes with caregiving.

If passed, it would allow caregivers to use tax-free flexible spending accounts (FSAs) or health savings accounts (HSAs) to cover a parent’s or parent-in-law’s medical expenses—an important step toward recognizing and supporting the care so many provide every day.

As part of our People Behind Our Purpose series, we’re excited to introduce you to Lisa, who has played a key role in strengthening our community impact through visual storytelling.

With a keen eye for design and a genuine passion for human connection, Lisa understands that visual communication can build trust, strengthen engagement, and deeply move people.

When asked about her favorite part of growing older, Lisa shared: "All the life lessons and experiences I can draw from. Confidence in knowing who YOU are. Aging is a privilege, and feeling more comfortable in your own skin is an invaluable gift."

Kathy Bates took home Best TV Actress at the Movies for Grownups Awards with AARP for her powerful performance in Matlock, and her acceptance speech was a reminder of why representation at EVERY age matters.

“When we aren’t reflected in those stories...we all start to feel unseen and invisible," she said.

Kathy Bates won Best TV Actress at the Movies for Grownups Awards with AARP, recognizing her titular role on "Matlock."

Stories shape how we see ourselves and how others see our potential, she told the crowd during her acceptance speech. “When we aren’t reflected in those stories ... we all start to feel unseen and invisible," she said. "People stop noticing us."

Like her character, Bates embodies the power of visibility — being seen for who you are and realizing your potential at any age.

“Our show speaks to all ages, but in particular grownup audiences,” said her co-star Jason Ritter, who presented her with the award. “It was created in response to ageism in society and especially Hollywood.”

By challenging ageist stereotypes and putting experience center stage, the show and Bates' performance in it, prove that talent, relevance and power don’t fade with age — they deepen.

One of our favorite ways to advance age-friendly work in our community is by supporting the Be Minnesnowta Nice initiative.

This year, members of our team gathered at Bayfront Festival Park again for Cold Front to raise awareness of the role clear, safe, and accessible sidewalks play in creating a community where people of all ages can stay connected, active, and engaged year-round.

Because advancing age-friendly work takes all of us working together as one community.
