Today on International Holocaust Remembrance Day, we pay tribute to a Holocaust survivor who left a legacy of education and advocacy.
Gerda Weissman Klein (1924-2022) was a Polish-American writer who, with husband Kurt Klein, was a strong advocate for Holocaust education and human rights. She was a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2010 as a result of her work which included a career in journalism, an autobiography ""All But My Life"" (1957), an Academy Award for Best Documentary based on her autobiography (1995), and serving on the governing board of the US Holocaust Memorial Museum (1997-2007).
In 2008, Ms. Klein founded Citizenship Counts, a nonprofit with the goal of championing the value and responsibilitites of American citizenship. She said:
“To perpetuate the miracle that is America, we must teach our children about its rich history as a nation of immigrants who chose this country and have given meaning to its ideals. Citizenship Counts will engage today’s students in civics education, combined with active participation in a naturalization ceremony, to help ensure that the citizens of tomorrow will continue to foster tolerance, understanding, service to one another, and a greater appreciation for the privilege and responsibility of citizenship.”
