During the summer, everyone is super busy enjoying longer days, soaking up the sun, and of course, engaging in their favorite warm weather activities. So why not mix some language skills into these lazy days?

One of our favorite summer activities is swimming, and we are constantly in the pool with our kids. Did you know how many different ways you could add language into a pool day? 🤿

Some language skills you can work on are:
🏊‍♀️Vocabulary
🏊‍♀️ Describing
🏊‍♀️Answering Questions
🏊‍♀️Following Directions
🏊‍♀️Sentence Expansion

Just to name a few. And the best part is…your kiddos will be too busy having fun to realize they are learning 😜

Highlighting Better Hearing and Speech Month wouldn't be complete without acknowledging the link between hearing and speech. 🚨

When developing speech and language, we rely on our hearing! It's our guide in distinguishing sounds and expanding our vocabulary. 🤯

That's why when we hear that a parent is concerned about speech, the first thing we always ask is..."has his/her hearing been checked recently?" ‼️

The answer to this is so important because it can explain the cause of the delay and help determine the best course forward.

So if you are concerned, notify your pediatrician or ENT and ask for a hearing test (or connect with your friendly local SLP or audiologist 😉).

🚨🚨 Did you know that there is a difference between speech and language?? 🤔

SPEECH: how we produce sounds and words (aka what we sound like and how easily people understand us) 🗯️

LANGUAGE: the system of words we use and how we use them (aka what words we know, how we put them together and how we understand others) 💭

By combining the areas of SPEECH and LANGUAGE together, we get 🥁 🥁... COMMUNICATION 🗣️🎉

🚨🚨Kids are more than a check mark, a progress note, a goal.

Sure..as teachers and therapists, we all have outcomes we have to achieve, standards we have to meet.

But...when addressing parents, we can’t lose sight that our students are their children.

Instead, we can highlight:
🌟how children interacts with their educators and environment
🌟what things they enjoy (or don’t...)
🌟social interactions
🌟how far they have come since last year (even if a goal hasn’t been met)
🌟positive personality traits
🌟small wins (can they now transition when they initially couldn’t? Are they more engaged than they used to be? Have they built relationships with peers and adults?)

When all you focus on is the goals they have or haven’t achieved it could make the parent feel like all you care about is “getting the job done.” (And we all know we aren’t in this field just to have a job 🤷🏻‍♀️)

Sharing little wins go a long way. 💪 🏆

April is occupational therapy month!

Did you know that the most common question OTs get is:

“… uh what is occupational therapy? Do you help people get jobs? “🙃🤣

We get it, with so many different types of services it’s hard to figure out what OTs do.

So to celebrate OT month, we decided to create a resource for you to answer all your OT related questions!

We’d also love to know if you or a family member worked with an OT before how they have they helped you in your life. Let us know below ⬇️
