A phrase that seems to be spoken daily in my home lately;

“it’s always something”

Between the weight of struggles in our modern world, the reality of keeping day to day life afloat, and waiting for the next bit of life-altering news, it feels like we are in a constant state of bracing for the next impact.

That feeling of waiting for the next hiccup, crisis, loss, pain, starts to build into an expectation that it’s just going to be something again tomorrow.

I offer this week that it is always going to be something. That’s what life is, a series of somethings that we can face head on or ignore until a breaking point. So how can we resist the tendency to constantly brace ourselves for what’s next and find peace in what is right here?

Without ignoring or bypassing the challenges of life, can we release a bit of that bracing feeling to savor the cup of coffee after a restless night, the fond memory after a significant loss, the acts of pure, loving humanity in the face of war.

If we are stuck waiting for whats next, we miss the precious privilege of release in the time between.

It has been a bit of a damning week for our collective human psyche. I find myself somewhere between anger, frustration, exhaustion, avoidance, and deep gratitude for the privilege of personal freedom and safety.

In response to criticism for drawing attention to the (horrific) anti-trans legislation in Texas in the midst of erupting war in Ukraine, Brené Brown wrote “I can worry about both. Rank ordering suffering is bulls*** and only serves “power over” - I have a huge heart. I can care about both.”

This strikes a cord. Through the troubles we have faced as a global community these past two years it’s become hard to discern what voices are speaking truth, what motivates the spread of information, and what cause needs the most immediate tending. Brené has been a steadfast voice of compassion, empathy, and showing up to get it right, instead of trying to be right.

I can’t help but feel a tinge of disbelief that individuals in power continue to wage hate and violence instead of love and acceptance. That sense of disbelief stems from hope that ego-driven “power-over” is wearing thin. I don’t know the right way to respond to or absorb all the devastating news, but I do know that my heart can hold a lot at once and I will always work to keep it open.

Sending a belated Happy New Year today as the post-holiday melt slowly begins.

A couple weeks ago I saw a video of someone getting out of their car and stepping on to an unexpected ice patch in their driveway.

They somehow keep from falling while slipping/running in place for as long as the video lasted, 20 or more seconds. Their expression was fearful at first and then transitioned into joyful disbelief

Watching that video was like watching a perfectly crafted metaphor for life in the year 2021.

There have been so many moments of flailing, nearly falling, somehow continuing to run, fear, uncertainty, and then, despite all that, experiences of unexpected joy.

Yoga teaches us the practice of surrender - not a despondent or hopeless definition of surrender - but rather the kind of surrender that releases us from our expectations of life. When we surrender to what is instead of focusing on what we thought should be we make facing what is a little easier. In short, spending energy wishing the ice patch wasn’t there doesn’t make traversing it any easier, and that awareness takes practice!

May we all find moments of joyful disbelief mid-flail in this New Year,

Melanie + OM Space
