Every house has a story, this is ours.

Part 6:

Maybe this is love letter to that person, which is *every person* I see fighting the good fight right now. I got you, I see you. I’m not going anywhere. Because Minneapolis is HOME.

Photo 1-2: Primary bathroom, more to come on the renovation we did here. But to say that I get excited to use my own bathroom would be an understatement. We looove her.

Every house has a story, this is ours.

Part 5:
It’s a time when you want to throw your hands up, give up, cry…
or move.
But just like in 2020 when we doubled down on our city, we’re still here. I have never been more proud to be from Minnesota. It’s my people, my friends and family. It’s knowing they have my back just like I have theirs. It’s random people smiling as you pass, as if to say *I see you right now, we’re in this together*. It’s a lot and if you need to check out for a day you can. I got you.

Photo 1: The TV nook in our primary suite, post renovation. The beauty of a half story is all the eaves and nooks, so we leaned into them and made 3 different zones. A TV lounge spot, the bed wall and the bathroom/closet.
Photo 2-3: The bed wall. New historically accurate windows and built in cabinetry on either side of the bed (in the eaves) makes for a visually dramatic and efficient bed wall. PS: the double drape is my favorite part. So nice to soften the light on that south facing window.
Photo 4: Just before reframing the walls during construction. You can see the two zones for the bed (right) and the TV (left).

Every house has a story, this is ours.

Part 4:
Our city still hasn’t recovered from COVID or the unrest after George Floyd was killed. We reeled after the Annunciation school shootings last fall that took the lives (and innocence) of many we know. We were gutted when our state representative and her husband were shot and killed in their home in October. And once again we find our city headlining the news. ICE, everywhere. Crawling. Searching. Devastating. Everything and everyone has been affected by “Operation Metro Surge” but I can not fathom being a Mom with brown skin in this moment. How does it feel sending your kids outside not knowing if they’ll be picked up and taken? I do believe we need immigration reform, but not this way. Full stop. Not. This. Way. These people make up our blocks, our small businesses, our schools. They are one of us, they’re Minnesotans.

Photo 1-3, My son Soren’s bedroom. During the upstairs reno we decided to give his room an upgrade too (scope creep is real). It’ll easily transition to our guest bedroom once he leaves for college in a year and a half.

Part 3:
Here we are 6 years later. The kids are now in high school, and we’re looking down the barrel of empty nesting. We’ve added a dog, now we have two (though I want like 12). We also renovated the entire upper level to give my husband and I a luxurious primary suite. It allows our man-sized children and their friends a bit more space to hang, while we retreat upstairs.

The house is a living breathing thing that we’ve really made *ours*. It works for the 4 of us on the daily and for hosting 17 at Thanksgiving. It has areas that feel wonderful on a dark December morning and other spots that are made for hot July evenings. Our kids have had parties and our dogs have chewed furniture and barfed on a new rugs. This is life. And our sweet bungalow witnesses it all, and keeps loving us through it.

Every home has a story. This is ours.

Part 2:

Alas, the joyful chapter in the duplex was coming to a close, and quickly. It was early Covid and everything felt suffocating. My business was growing fast and working from a slice of kitchen countertop was becoming…crazy. Hearing the pitter patter of our friend’s feet upstairs turned from sweet and familiar to threatening. What a crazy time. The prospect of a bit more space to spread out as our boys were becoming tweens, felt right. We put an offer on the little bungalow and sure enough, it was ours. We immediately tore out the s**g carpet in the upper level but otherwise we moved in as-is. We had mostly leftover furniture from our twenties and a dream that maybe in a couple years we could spring for the cobbler getting some shoes.

Every home has a story, this is ours.

Part 1:
We put an offer on our home 8 weeks after George Floyd was killed. Many people had made the decision to move out of Minneapolis during that time as our city was literally smoldering from unrest. Oh, and it was deep Covid.

I got a call from a past client, saying they were moving out of the city and selling their home. It was a story and a half 1920’s Bungalow, the kind you see on almost every street in Minneapolis. I had worked with them on a kitchen renovation the first year my business was official, in 2018. The home was a “starter home” for many, just two bedrooms and one bath on the main level with a semi finished bedroom and bath in the upper half story. To my husband and I, it felt enormous. Let me back up for a second, you see my husband and I always felt strongly about our home being communal in a sense. We had been living in a modest but adorable 1920’s Tudor style duplex; our tenants were friends that were like family. The children would run from their “house” to ours, we’d often cook meals together and have each others’ backs during those early days of being a parent. It was a joyous lifeline, for almost 10 years.

Part 2 coming tomorrow.

Something I get from clients time and time again is WE NEED A COMFORTABLE RUG. People want to get on the floor with their kids or grandkids, they want to be comfy and easy. This rug was one of those, a little fuzzy and very wrestle-friendly. 💪🏼

I’ll be putting my travel adventures on stories. As counterintuitive as it is to leave Minneapolis right now I’m also greatly looking forward to a break from it all. How lucky that I have a choice.

See you across the pond 🇬🇧
